News Exa Corporation’s newest product, PowerDELTA, incorporates Spatial technology to provide key features for the automotive industry.

PowerDELTA streamlines and automates the simulation model creation process by enabling multiple and time-consuming meshing tasks to be performed in a single, easy-to-use, integrated application.

PowerDELTA uses Spatial’s 3D InterOp to import and heal native CAD models, reducing or eliminating translation problems commonly encountered in the CAD to CAE process. Having the 3D ACIS Modeler as its CAD engine, empowers users to perform CAD operations on the imported geometry, greatly enhancing their model preparation and meshing capabilities as well as improving response times to design changes at any stage of the development process.

"PowerDELTA is a novel approach to merging the CAE meshing and geometry modeling environments and Spatial’s 3D InterOp and ACIS components provide critical portions of our product," stated Dr. Paul Stewart, Exa’s Director of Product Management.

Exa selected ACIS and 3D InterOp for their breadth of capability and ability to handle all native CAD formats, particularly CATIA V4 and V5 and Pro/E. These two formats are widely used by Exa’s customers in the automotive industry.

Spatial’s 3D development components enable Exa to address vehicle product development throughout the entire design and engineering process by offering a complete digital simulation solution, a trend that the industry as a whole is embracing. PowerDELTA provides for import of a full bill of materials and records all geometric operations with a process audit trail. ACIS enables PowerDELTA to function like a solid modeling tool allowing any changes to be rolled back through the process history tree. The result is a solution that advances design and analysis collaboration and speeds time to market.

"Spatial is uniquely able to meet CAE developer’s needs because we offer both a 3D modeler in ACIS, and CAD interoperability capabilities with 3D InterOp. Applications, such as PowerDELTA, need more than simple import of a CAD model," notes John Alpine, Spatial’s Vice President of Research and Development. "Successful translation requires repairing and healing of the model so that it is watertight and modifiable. This requires a deep understanding of both the geometry kernel and CAD translators. That makes Spatial the optimal choice for CAE applications."
