FIA Uses CFD to Investigate Overtaking Solution

News FIA president Max Mosley claims the sport's governing body is on the verge of unveiling a solution to Formula 1's lack of overtaking while at the same time permanently reducing downforce without significantly slowing the sport down.

AMD, which is a leading microprocessor manufacturer, is to make available a supercomputer for the FIA to calculate the downforce dimensions required to promote overtaking.

"Various attempts have been made to solve the problem we've got, which is that the car behind needs to be two seconds a lap faster on the average circuit before it can overtake," he said.

"The supercomputer will enable us to run, using computational fluid dynamics, a number of programmes which would be the equivalent of turning up here (at Monza) with two F1 cars and a vast number of people who can make bits," he added.

"All of that we are going to be able to do on the computer and all of it before the end of the year, so we will be able to publish these regulations before then."
