STAR-CCM+ v7.04 - Accelerate, Understand, Improve

News CD-adapco has released STAR-CCM+ v7.04, a major new version of its multidisciplinary engineering simulation solution.

Accelerate Your Product Development
One of the central tenets of simulation as applied to the product development process is that "sometimes a late simulation result is no better than no result at all." In order to play a role in product development simulation results have to be supplied on time, every-time: "Major enhancements in STAR-CCM+ v7.04 will allow our users to accelerate their product development processes by performing more simulation in a shorter time-scale," says Ercolanelli.

The introduction of Multi-part Solids improves the scalability of thermal simulations that previously involved multiple parts and materials. The ability to use a single solid continuum makes thermal simulation problems much easier to set-up, and significantly increases the speed of calculation.

The new Solar Loads Calculator allows solar radiation to be automatically specified by latitude, longitude, time and date, with an additional factor to account for changing skies. These parameters are updated automatically during transient analysis to facilitate the simulation of occupant comfort.

From STAR-CCM+ v7.04, users will have the opportunity to use Optimate and Optimate+, which are add-on modules for STAR-CCM+ that directly employ state-of-the-art process automation and design optimization technology from Red Cedar. The Optimate solution, which includes CD-adapco’s Power Token software licensing, eliminates the barriers that have historically prevented CFD-based design optimization with any real practicality. Optimate allows engineering designers to easily set up, execute, and post-process design exploration studies such as parameter sweeps and/or DOEs. Optimate+ adds the capability to perform automated design optimization studies using the SHERPA algorithm from Red Cedar, providing the required efficiency for optimization with complex CFD simulations.

Further enhancements in speed come from the introduction of a newly improved mesh morpher, which delivers a speedup of up to 4x over previous releases. STAR-CCM+ v7.04 also offers significant enhancement to 3D-CAD and tighter integration with external CAD and PLM systems.

Improve Your Product Quality and Reliability
By most standard definitions, quality and reliability are the extent to which a product meets or exceeds a customer’s expectations. Increasing product quality is a strategic objective of every company involved in product design or manufacture. Despite this fact, improvements in product quality are notoriously hard-won: "If making better quality products were easy then everyone would do it. Any improvement in product quality is usually the result of significant investment in simulation-based-design," says Ercolanelli. "STAR-CCM+ v7.04 includes new modeling capabilities that allow our users to tackle the most difficult problems that industry has to offer, ultimately delivering better engineered products with premium quality and enhanced performance."

The introduction of Implicit Co-simulation between STAR-CCM+ v7.04 and Abaqus v6.12 also represents a significant enhancement, increasing the stability of highly non-linear fluid-structure-interaction problems, speeding up the solution time by use of typically larger time-steps, and bringing practical FSI simulation within the grasp of every simulation engineer.

A new Granular Flow model enhances the Eulerian multiphase capabilities of STAR-CCM+ by facilitating the simulation of highly packed materials, accounting for the frictional stress and particle drag. This capability opens up applications such as fluidized beds, drilling, slurry flows, and granular transport to simulation.

The new multi-component film model delivers the ability to predict multi-component stripping, evaporation and condensation from a liquid film for applications such as headlamp defogging and spray-painting.

The Overset Mesh feature is expanded to allow regions to travel to, and beyond, the boundary of the domain, improving the flexibility of overset grids and allowing the simulation of very close moving bodies, such as store separation.

Directed Meshing allows users to easily create swept meshes, either from the surface of an existing mesh, or from a patched surface. This capability is useful across a wide range of applications, such as: blade path for turbomachinery; electronics components from a circuit board; buildings from a site plan; exhaust manifold; etc.

Better insight into product performance
The ability to communicate engineering information, while engaging with an increasingly non-specialist audience, is a key skill for any CAE analyst: “The success of a simulation can only be measured by the extent that it influences the design process,” says Ercolanelli. “Effective communication of complex engineering simulation data is a key part of this process.”

The new Line Integral Convolution plot, brings 3D vector fields to life, by allowing the interrogation of the complete flow-field using texture-based "oil flow" representation, highlighting flow-features that were not previously apparent using traditional post-processing.

An Unwrap/Unroll transformation allows users to enhance their post-processing by "unrolling" three-dimensional surfaces onto a flat plane, which is especially useful for turbomachinery or nuclear fuel-rod simulations.

A new Aero-Vibro Acoustics add-on module provides a complete toolset for aero-acoustics analysis, combining powerful physics with flexible analysis tools, including 1D Wave number decomposition, surface plots for the visualization of derived datasets, Line FFTs and FWH Quadrupole export and visualization.
