News Today marks a watershed for CAE as CD-adapco, the leading provider of full-spectrum Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) solutions, has announced the second major release of STAR-CCM+.

First released in 2004, STAR-CCM+ combines the very latest CFD and computing technology, delivered in an environment that is easier to use than any other tool on the market. This release adds state-of-the-art meshing technology and a wealth of advanced physics to STAR-CCM+'s capabilities.

CD-adapco's President and co-founder Steve MacDonald recognizes the impressive pace of STAR-CCM+'s development "STAR-CCM+ is fast becoming CAE's benchmark for state-of-the-art technology and ease-of-use. This combination makes it a 'must have' tool for engineers across CAE and is another reason why CD-adapco is your CAE partner for success."

Meshing

Following the "from the ground up" philosophy that was the inspiration behind its original development, the mesh generation technology at the heart of this release has been rewritten from scratch. The resulting process, from surface import to post-processing is more robust, more powerful and more automatic than ever.

The meshing capabilities include:

  •  Surface wrapper: CD-adapco's technology-leading surface wrapper, for automatic repair of complex CAD, shaving hours of the model set-up process.
  • CD-adapco's unique Polyhedral Meshing: fast and automatic meshing of complex geometries, without compromising solution accuracy.
  •  Solver optimized meshing: Our meshing and solver development teams work hand-in-hand to ensure that all meshes are as robust and accurate as possible.

CD-adapco will be running a number of free webinars to allow you to judge STAR-CCM+'s meshing capabilities. Visit CD-adapco for details.

Physical Modeling and Solver

The rapid development of STAR-CCM+ means that V2 is also packed full of new physical models, opening the benefits of STAR-CCM+'s easy-to-use CFD insight to more engineers across all industries.

The new features include:

  • Free-surface and Volume of Fluid (VOF): Cutting edge free-surface and VOF models that are utilized throughout the marine industry in COMET.
  • Combustion and Radiation: Adding to STAR-CCM+'s powerful thermal capabilities, V2 features easy-to-use combustion and radiation models that are suitable for application in the Power Generation industry, vehicle thermal management and fire safety.
  • Boundary-layer transition: Ideal for aerospace and turbomachinery aerodynamic calculations, engineers can replicate wind-tunnel conditions with this boundary-layer transition capability.
  • One billion cells and beyond: Unlike any other CFD code, STAR-CCM+ has been specifically designed to deliver scalable solutions on even the largest meshes.
  • External aerodynamics and underhood simulations: The combination of STAR-CCM+'s new capabilities have pushed it ahead of the competition, making it the state-of-the-art for external aero and underhood simulation.
