Optimal Solutions Releases New Version of Sculptor

News Sculptor™ is one of a new breed of "mesh-changing packages" that functions not by making shape deformations on the geometry of the object under test, but instead, by directly deforming the volume mesh along with the object shape.

With the completion and recent release of Sculptor 1.7.2, client companies will again gain from the increased functionality and robustness of the technology. Project duration time will be shortened, because designers will now have the ability to more quickly quantify their mesh quality, as well as define the bounds of the geometry of their parts' constraint surfaces.

Specifically, the technology is now able to perform the following functions:
  • Element Quality Measurement - The ability to now perform element quality analysis on CFD mesh files will enable the user to determine whether or not the deformations performed in Sculptor have significantly altered the mesh quality. Unacceptable deformations will be avoided, since the user will now be able to calculate each cell’s volumes, skew, aspect ratio, etc.
  • Constraint Geometry Checking - Sculptor can now read in STL files that can be used to define geometric bounds. Often, the degree to which a part can be deformed needs to be constrained by surrounding parts. Therefore, the part being optimized can only be deformed within a certain space. With constraint geometry checking, the surface of the surrounding parts is modeled by a faceted surface in the STL file. Sculptor then determines the minimum distance between the CFD analysis grid and the constraint surfaces and detects if a collision is imminent.
  • Format Interfaces - Sculptor can now import and export ICEM-CFD files. Sculptor’s interface to Nastran files has been greatly enhanced. A complete Star CD translator, which performs element quality checking.
  • Manage Licenses - Sculptor now employees the FlexLM License Manager.
  • Parametric Scale Function - A parametric scale function and rotation about an arbitrary axis has been added, together with the ability for these functions to be used as variables during optimization.
