Optimal Solutions Launches Optimization Software

News On October 1, 2003, Optimal Solutions Software, L.L.C., officially launched “Sculptor™”, a revolutionary computational fluid dynamics (CFD) shape deformation and design optimization software tool. This major offering to the CFD industry answers the question of how to improve CFD designs—in the most cost-effective, timely manner.

Working synergistically with such CFD analysis codes as Fluent, WIND, StarCD, and NASA’s in-house CFD codes, the Sculptor design tool has assisted the auto industry, defense contractors, Department of Energy sites, and NASA in quickly finding solutions to complex CFD shaping issues.

“ We used Sculptor to develop an optimal shape for a mixing nozzle. Our goal was to decrease the distance between the maximum turbulence and the point of sonic transition. Within hours, Sculptor, coupled with Fluent, found a shape that increased the tangential mass flow at exit by 13%, minimized the distance between the maximum turbulence and the sonic point by 66% and increased the turbulence. Without Sculptor we would have spent weeks trying to solve this problem by revisiting the CAD model again and again, changing shapes by trial-and-error. We are very pleased with this software product.”

Advisory Engineer
Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Lab.

Unique: Fast and Accurate

There is nothing in the marketplace quite like Sculptor. It is an interactive design tool—not an analysis tool.

Typically, in order to arrive at an optimal design, numerous mesh generation iterations are required—this can take hundreds and thousands of man-hours of work and rework time—with an increased opportunity for error. The ASD Arbitrary Shape Deformation technology used by Sculptor™ automatically, in real time, alters shapes that are typically very complex and hard to manipulate into designs that improve performance—without having to remesh.

Better, more accurate designs and faster design times are realized, resulting in appreciable amounts of time and money being saved.

Pricing and Availability

Optimal Solutions is available on Linux, UNIX (HP, SUN, and soon SGI), and Windows NT/2000/XP platforms. Upon request, it is provided for one month at no cost.

The number of seats that are required by the user determines the cost of the annual license fee. The license fee includes unlimited technical support. A 20% (twenty percent) discount is offered where licenses are coupled with contracting for consulting services. Six and three-month licenses are available; training is negotiated on a case-by-case basis.

Outsourcing

If your need for CFD design is not continuous, or you have special project requirements that demand software customization or high levels of computing power, you may choose to take advantage of the Optimal Solutions’ CFD consulting services. Optimal Solutions consultants are experts in applying the software to help you solve problems. A consultant can provide a timely answer to a critical problem in a very cost-effective manner.

About Optimal Solutions

Optimal Solutions is the world’s only provider of CFD design that uses the ASD technology to perform shape design. Any company that has optimization problems that include: minimizing pressure losses, improving desired flow quality in ducts, enhancing flow quality for chemical reactions or combustion devices, maximizing lift-to-drag ratios, improving heat transfer, reducing noise—virtually any type of CFD-based design optimization issue—should use this tool.

Using Optimal Solutions’ software, design engineers are able to reduce the need for costly physical testing and prototyping. Any company or industry that designs components with fluid flow, heat and mass transfer, and chemically reacting flows, including combustion, would benefit by using Sculptor™.

The corporate offices are in Idaho Falls, Idaho, near some of the world’s most beautiful outdoor recreation areas, including Yellowstone National Park, The Upper Snake River Valley, and Teton National Park. The Optimal Solutions’ research and development operations are located in Provo, Utah.
