CFD Analysis in Chemical Engineering Workshop

Announcements Zeus Numerix, Mumbai and IIT, Bombay are jointly organizing a 5 day workshop on CFD Analysis in Chemical Engineering at the IIT Bombay Extension Centre, Gandhinagar, Gujarat to be held July 7-11, 2008.

The primary aim of this course is to provide an exposure to the vast field of CFD for chemical engineering applications, with a hands on experience on solving simple models using the CFDExpert tool.

The aim is also to introduce to the industry, the expertise and tools developed in IIT Bombay. In the whole process, the IIT Bombay team also hopes to learn from the participants the kind of problems they face, which could in turn lead to supplementing the features supported in their CFD tool, and initiating sustained collaboration with the Industries and R&D organisations.

Upon successful completion of the course the participants should be able to:

  1. Setup a procedure within CFDExpert to model, solve, and validate a simplified version of a problem involving fluid flow and heat transfer.
  2. Extend the model to include complexities (in the geometry and fluid behavior) and interpret the results.

  • Engineers in General Maintenance Divisions, in charge of de-bottlenecking and troubleshooting

  • Scientists and R&D consultants
  • Faculty from Engineering colleges

The prerequisite for this course is an undergraduate level exposure in chemical engineering topics/problems in fluid mechanics, reaction, and heat transfer related unit operations. A basic knowledge of computers is also essential.

Course contents
Introduction, Review of Fluid Mechanics, Numerical Methods; Solution Methods, Boundary Conditions, Grid Generation; Heat Transfer, Mass Transfer and Reactive systems; Turbulence Modelling, Reactor Modelling; Multiphase Flows, CFD in Process Industries. Problem solving in Chemical Engineering Applications.
