News The CD adapco Group would like to invite you to attend a free 45 minute seminar on "CFD simulation of PEM fuel cell technology using STAR-CD" at the fuel cells exhibition in Stuttgart, Germany on 14-15 October.

The CD adapco Group has recognised the growing interest in fuel cell technology and the use of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFC) as a means of developing cleaner and more efficient electric power units for automotive applications. We have been involved in an intensive program of collaborative research and development, with expert partners such as the Fuel Cells Department of the University of South Carolina, with the aim of providing the industry with the best CFD analysis solutions in this area.

As a consequence of work with expert partners such as the Fuel Cells Department of the University of South Carolina, the CFD code STAR-CD can now help you with better understanding of physical phenomena that takes place inside the fuel cells. There is an ever-increasing use of CFD and STAR-CD in resolving critical engineering issues related to the performance of fuel cells. Typical Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFC) issues that can be simulated and analysed using CFD include:

Pressure balance between the hydrogen and air side of a PEM membrane, to help understand and avoid the sudden imbalances that can destroy cells.

Temperature distribution in the cells, to understand and avoid excessive heating that can cause energy consumption at the expense of electricity production.

Management of water production by electrochemical reaction and gas humidification, to understand and avoid build-up of water that can prevent proper gas circulation and cell efficiency.

Better understanding of the electrochemistry and its influence on fuel cell construction and efficiency.

Optimisation of current and voltage distribution in the conducting solids and porous regions.

If you would like to know more about how STAR-CD can help you with fuel cell design issues, you can attend our short seminar or meet us at Hall: List-Saal Stand: 01 in the exhibition. You can also contact us for more information by email: info@cd-germany.de
