Kenneth G. Brill, executive director of the Uptime Institute in Santa Fe, N.M., has written a cautionary commentary in Forbes regarding the use of CFD modeling of data centers.
It looks impressive enough, but the current rage of using computational fluid dynamics modeling software in data centers is creating a false sense of security in anticipating computer equipment heat loads. The very elegant and impressive color renderings of cold airflows generated by CFD software are totally dependent on the installed cooling equipment actually delivering assumed capacities.
