Coupled CFD and FEA Analysis Opens New Design Avenues

News The coupling of structural and fluid analysis allows designers to examine the effects of fluid-structure interaction, effects which can be used to improve the overall design, such as a Formula One car's wing which deflects at certain speeds to achieve different performance.

An Engineer Online article explores the technology behind coupling FEA and CFD analysis and the benefits of doing so.

In the 'real world', physical phenomena tend to act together: an aerodynamic wing, for instance, needs to be modelled for stress, vibration and fluid flow. The design of these kinds of systems using single-phenomenon behaviour currently entails many back-and-forth iterations until an optimum is reached.
