Billion Cell Models in the Near Future

News In his keynote speech at the recent Gridgen User Group Meeting, Dr. Bill Clark, Director of the CD-adapco Engineering Software Business Unit, stated that some of CD-adapco's customers are running 400 million cell models currently and that he expects them to run one billion cell models by next year.

Dr. Clark attributed the dramatic increase in model size to the increasing use of HPC clusters for CFD simulation. However, he noted that there are some barriers to the advancement of flow simulation which must be overcome if CFD is to reach it's full potential.

One problem Dr. Clark identified is the issue of data manipulation for the extremely large models now being created. It is simply infeasible to collect transient data for all flow variables in a 400 million cell model. A solution Dr. Clark feels is viable is reduction of the collected data based on criteria determined a priori. Determining which data is important before the simulation begins is a challenging task, but it will enable model sizes which are impractical otherwise.

Another barrier Dr. Clark identified was the link between CAE and CFD. More and more, people want to model multidisciplinary problems and the tools available are still inefficient at communicating. CD-adapco is working intently on this problem.

Finally, Dr. Clark stated that CAD model preparation and mesh creation still occupies up to 80% of total analysis time. Improvements must be made in this area if analysis times are to be reduced significantly.
