Flotation, a process where valuable minerals are separated from low-grade ore by entraining the minerals in the froth, is a very important part of modern mining. After 100 years of modern flotation, more money can be made by achieving a cleaner separation of minerals.
Now CFD techniques are being employed to study the physics of flotation and how the process can be improved.
“In flotation cells, the use of computational fluid dynamic model-ling has now come of age, and it is possible to gain an insight into the distribution of energy in various areas of a flotation tank,”
Much of this research is being carried out under the auspices of AMIRA’s P780A project.
