Application: Cooling The London Coliseum

Application The London Coliseum was completed in 1904 and originally utilized plenum-style ventilation. Later, facilities were added to supply flow at the seating level and remove it at the ceiling. In 2000, cooling was added to the supply air.

Now, Arup is undertaking a complete redesign of the ventilation system. The new design will feature the more modern system of supplying cooling air at the ceiling and drawing it out at the seating levels. The three seating levels (dress circle, upper circle and balcony) complicated the design.

In order to optimize the airflow for maximum occupant comfort, Arup utilized CFD modeling of the coliseum.

The computational domain consisted of the main auditorium with seating in the stalls, dress circle, upper circle and balcony, orchestra pit and boxes and was composed of 550,000 cells.

Since air is supplied at the ceiling and drawn out at the seating levels, the main problem was determining the proper flow split between the three main seating levels. Using three CFD simulations of various flow split scenarios, Arup was able to determine the optimum flow split to provide the most uniform temperature at the seating levels.

Arup used STAR-CD to model the flow field and EnSight software to visualize the results and present them in an easy to understand format.
