Optimizing Santa's Rapid Delivery Vehicle

News John Stokes,
ANSYS Germany

The CFX Team in Germany was recently approached by a customer faced with the need to deliver his products to an ever-increasing number of clients, in a limited delivery period (one night). At his disposal is a single delivery vehicle, and the propulsion for the delivery vehicle is fixed at 9 RP (Reindeer Power). Therefore, reduced aerodynamic drag could lead to significant increases in vehicle speed, and consequently allow delivery to be made in the required time.

The power, precision, and performance of the newest ANSYS software tools were used to investigate the aerodynamic efficiency of the vehicle, and identify possibilities for improvement (for example by varying the shape of the ornate carvings in the vehicle). First a parametric 3D model of the vehicle was created in DesignModeler. The 3D-model was passed on to the ICEM CFD software to quickly create a high-quality hybrid mesh. Finally, this mesh was used to make a reliable and fast prediction of the flow using CFX. As a result of the simulation and the efficiency improvements it identified, it appears that even with the increased demands on our customer, his delivery targets can still to be met. Once again, ANSYS is helping to spread joy to people all around the world!

Close examination of the flow simulation image shows that the simulation reflects the current trend towards triangular presents. The outlook for the coming year is however a return to the more traditional hex-dominant presents.
