News What does a 25-year-old engineering student studying aerodynamic optimization want more than anything in the world: a chance to work for six months with the ING Renault F1 Team in their Research and Development Department in Enstone, United Kingdom — with full accommodations and a company car, to boot!

That is just what happened to Josef Dubsky from the Czech Republic when he entered the 2007 Altran Engineering Academy’s fourth annual worldwide competition — and defeated nearly 1,000 young engineers who entered detailed technical projects in the competition.

Application by Bob Cramblitt

As the wins and top-10 finishes over the last two years in the Nextel Cup and Busch Series accumulated, theories abounded on what triggered the amazing comeback of the Richard Childress Racing team.

Amid all the public speculation, there was something going on behind the scenes that might be one of the biggest keys to RCR’s new-found prosperity: The team was benefiting from greater use of technologies such as digital shape sampling and processing (DSSP) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) by engineers who know how to translate research results into on-track performance.

News A recent Flomerics survey investigating the opinions of mechanical design engineers on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis revealed that the vast majority (75%) of mechanical designers have heard of CFD. The same survey revealed that 80% of mechanical design engineers are not currently using CFD.

The most common reason cited in the survey as to why relatively few mechanical design engineers are using CFD was that “most mechanical design engineers don’t have the necessary expertise and knowledge to use a CFD code.”
