Application: CFD Used to Investigate Mystery of Dolphin's Speed
Posted Sat July 07, 2007 @12:43PM

Application How do dolphins maintain a swimming speed of up to 10 meters per second? Standard engineering calculations predict that the dolphin’s muscles would have to be seven times more powerful than they actually are to achieve that speed.

An alternative explanation is that the dolphin somehow reduces the frictional drag on its skin through the water to a much lower level than experienced by other bodies in water.

New Book Covers State-of-the-Art Modelling of Free Surface Flows
Posted Thu July 05, 2007 @09:14AM

News Understanding the dynamics of free surface flows is the starting point of many environmental studies, impact studies, and waterworks design. These studies used to be done in the past with scale models, but these are now being replaced by numerical simulation performed by software suites called hydro-informatic systems.

Written by a leading authority on Computational Fluid Dynamics, the book aims to provide environmentalists, hydrologists, and engineers using hydro-informatic systems such as Telemac and the finite element method, with knowledge of the basic principles, capabilities, different hypotheses, and limitations of free surface modelling.

News An article posted a Engineer Live describes the use of CFD in a wide variety of power generation systems.
In power generation, CFD can help at every stage of the generating process. From the design of fluidised coal beds, through the optimisation of combustion chambers and turbines, to the modelling of exhaust flows and stack plumes. It is the unseen catalyst that will enable the final design of one of today's holy grails: a clean coal power generation plant featuring zero emissions of greenhouse gases.
