Application: Bullet on Wheels Aims for Human-Powered Vehicle Record

Application A Canadian designer used SolidWorks and COSMOS software to develop and optimize a human-powered vehicle that will attempt the 24-hour distance record in July. Capable of more than 60 miles per hour, the machine is essentially a recumbent bicycle - one where the rider lies on his back - encapsulated in an aerodynamic carbon fiber fairing.

"SolidWorks and COSMOS software helped us develop what we are convinced is a superior design from aerodynamic, mechanical, and ergonomic standpoints," said Designer Ben Eadie, owner of MountainWave Design Services in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. "But the proof will be laid down on the track." Eadie optimized the vehicle's aerodynamics by creating a "virtual wind tunnel" with COSMOSFloWorks computational fluid dynamics analysis software.

Post Processing Intelligent Light, developer of FIELDVIEW, the world’s foremost CFD post-processor, has made the latest development in high-performance exploration of CFD data available as a free download. The new FIELDVIEW ATViewer software delivers highly interactive exploration of CFD simulations post-processed with FIELDVIEW. The FIELDVIEW ATViewer client can be run as a standalone viewer for interrogation and collaboration.

The FIELDVIEW ATViewer software uses an extract database created by FIELDVIEW that can be many times smaller than the native dataset. The extract database contains all surfaces, rakes and relevant scalar, thresholding, and vector data allowing detailed, interactive analysis of steady and transient datasets using a local workstation.

How Ferrari Keeps its Data Cool

Hardware A huge part of any modern Formula One team's drive for more speed is the study and application of the aerodynamic behaviour of the vehicle which translates into the discipline of computational fluid dynamics (CFD).

The types of problems that Ferrari is trying to solve aren't confined to motor racing of course. Many enterprises have similar issues. Examples range from processor vendors -- who need CFD to find better ways to cool their chips -- to petro-chemical companies, who want to streamline the flows of raw materials, to academic institutions.

In How Ferrari Keeps Its Data Cool, Techworld interviewed Ferrari data centre manager Massimo Martelli about the challenges of cooling the equipment in their large CFD compute cluster.

New Software: ALGOR V19.2 Features Improved CFD

News ALGOR, Inc. announced that its latest software release, ALGOR V19.2, features all-new enhancements for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and Mechanical Event Simulation (MES). New features include the capability to model flow obstacles as distributed resistance parts, which can greatly simplify 3-D modeling; new surface-to-surface contact options (slide/no bounce contact and tied contact) for more realistic simulation and faster solving of MES applications such as a press-fit process; faster, industry-standard sparse solvers for linear dynamic analysis, static stress analysis and MES; and distributed memory processing for 32- and 64-bit Linux (Red Hat) for static stress analysis and MES. These and many more new V19.2 features provide ALGOR users with increased power, flexibility and ease-of-use for simulating engineering analyses of their product designs.
