No Mesh, No Fuss

News A Mechanical Engineering Magazine article describes the use of meshless finite element analysis. Rather than basing the computational method on a discrete mesh, the algorithm works with the analytical CAD surfaces defining the model.

"Right now, CAD systems have one framework for geometry and materials distribution, and analysis systems have another for behavior," Subbarayan said. "We've provided a mathematical framework that unifies geometry, material distribution, and behavior."

In the future, Subbarayan and his fellow researchers would like their software to be able to analyze for the coupled physical phenomena that are often a part of real-life engineering problems.

Application: CFD Helps Design Future Combat Vehicle

Application To meet the goal of lighter combat vehicles with equivalent firepower, muzzle brakes that redirect part of the gun's propellant flow backwards to reduce the gun's recoil are required. But this redirection must be accomplished while keeping the blast overpressure on the vehicle itself low enough to prevent injury to nearby soldiers as well as damage to the vehicle.

A Desktop Engineering article describes how engineers at the Army's Benét Laboratories in Watervliet, New York, have begun using CFD (computational fluid dynamics) to model the gun's recoil forces and blast pressures for different muzzle brake designs to provide optimized solutions of low recoil force with acceptable blast overpressure.

New Software: Hanley Upgrades MultiSurface Aerodynamics

News Hanley Innovations, a leader in the development of software for aerodynamics conceptual design and analysis, announced that a series of enhancemance were made to MultiSurface Aerodynamics to improve its performance and modeling capabilities. MultiSurface Aerodynamics is a Windows based software package for rapid aerodynamics conceptual and preliminary analysis and design of wings and other lifting surfaces.

MultiSurface Aerodynamics was updated to allow mirror imaging in the x-z plane (at y=0). This enhancement uses only half of the computational effort to analyze surfaces that use this plane as a reflective surface. Applications include keel & rudder analysis, sail analysis, symmetrically loaded wings and simulating side wall effects.

M Ship Wins Contract to Develop CFD Tools for Hull Design

News M Ship Co. announced the U.S. Navy's Office of Naval Research has awarded the firm a $750,000 contract, including options, to validate the potential of the innovative M-hull technology.

The Navy Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract calls for tank testing and sea trials for the M-hull technology, and the development of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools for quantifying the hull's performance.

Earlier this month, M Ship Co. delivered the M 80 Stiletto, an 88-foot vessel that uses the patented M-hull technology. M Ship Co. built the M 80 Stiletto for the Pentagon's Office of Force Transformation (OFT) as part of the OFT's Wolf PAC Distributed Operations Experiment, conducted in association with USSOCOM.

Application: CFD Project Improves Automotive Exhaust Performance

Application jagan prabhu writes "The main objective of our project work was to reduce the backpressure developed in an automobile silencer.

Initially the backpressure value was measured practically for the existing model and its CFD model was built and analysed. In order to reduce the backpressure different geometrical changes were made to the existing silencer in the CFD software and its flow characteristics were studied.

Out of the different models analysed in CFD, the optimized model was chosen and based on the software model a real model was constructed. Its back pressure value was measured practically and it was found to be less than the existing one. FLUENT 6.1 was used to solve the problem."
