Application: CFD Models Added to Diagnostician's Medical Bag
Posted Wed May 03, 2006 @04:07PM
Print version Email story Tweet story
Application R & D Magazine has a feature story on how CFD Modeling is Being Used for Medical Research. Examples of biomedical simulation cited in the article include blood clotting research, artery grafts, lung and trachea flow, drug delivery, and toxicology studies.
...biomedical engineering is being aided with the ability to reliably create 3-D models of large vessels that are patient specific. Adding to this acceptance by medical doctors, surgeons, and hospitals is that often the flow-related medical products that are currently involved in many proceduresóheart valves, drug dispensing stents, inhalers, and cathetersóhave had extensive CFD procedures successfully performed on them during the design process.

News Fluent Inc., the worldwide leader in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software and services, announces today a unique partnership with a leading French automotive manufacturer, PSA Peugeot CitroŽn, culminating in the porting of its software onto a large high-performance computing cluster.

Engineers at PSA Peugeot CitroŽn have been using Fluent's software for over a decade. This development in the relationship was initiated by the need to drive Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) engineering analysis tools like FLUENT earlier into the design cycle in order to cut vehicle development timescales.

News In his keynote speech at the recent Gridgen User Group Meeting, Dr. Bill Clark, Director of the CD-adapco Engineering Software Business Unit, stated that some of CD-adapco's customers are running 400 million cell models currently and that he expects them to run one billion cell models by next year.

Dr. Clark attributed the dramatic increase in model size to the increasing use of HPC clusters for CFD simulation. However, he noted that there are some barriers to the advancement of flow simulation which must be overcome if CFD is to reach it's full potential.

News CD-adapco is pleased to announce the release of STAR-Design V4.04. STAR-Designís intuitive user environment makes it the ideal tool for those engineers who are not Computational Fluid Dynamics specialists. Utilizing CD-adapcoís powerful CFD technology (including polyhedral meshing) means that ease-of-use does not compromise accuracy. STAR-Designís 3D solid modeler and geometry import allows engineers who donít use CAD to directly create and manage geometry for simulation.

In the design cycle: Specifically designed for use within the design cycle, STAR-Design has a number of features that enable quick but accurate ďwhat-ifĒ design evaluations on product performance.
