Eberspächer and Fluent Developing CFD Technology to Design Automotive Diesel Filters

News Fluent Inc., the world leader in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software and services, and J. Eberspächer GmbH & Co. KG, a leading German automotive parts manufacturer, have announced a joint collaboration to develop a diesel particulate filter simulation tool. This new tool will allow companies to computationally design and optimise particulate filters in passenger car and truck applications with respect to soot loading and regeneration behavior for a filter's projected full lifecycle before it is even manufactured.

Increasingly, people in urban landscapes are experiencing deleterious health effects resulting from prolonged exposure to microscopic dust particles, especially particulates coming from the increasing numbers of diesel powered trucks and cars on our roads.

Sun Sets World Records for MCAE Applications Performance

Hardware Sun Microsystems has set new world records for performance running LS-DYNA and Fluent software in real world scenarios on their Sun Fire x64 servers.

Keeping up the record-setting trend started by a 16-node cluster of Sun Fire X2100 servers on EXA's PowerFLOW CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) application, the 32-node cluster -- now powered by AMD's Opteron Model 156 processor, the highest-performing single-core AMD Opteron 100 series processor -- set two new world records on LS-DYNA and Fluent benchmarks. These benchmarks are based on the popular versions of the respective MCAE applications heavily used in the automotive, aerospace and consumer products industries.

New Software: Icemax Release Includes 64-bit Support

Application: The Difficulty of Simulating Blood Flow

Application Mechanical Engineering magazine is featuring an article with researchers at Rice University who have spent years perfecting a CFD method to simulate blood flow through a blood pump. Because half of blood volume is composed of red blood cells and the rest is liquid plasma, the fluid behaves differently than air or water would.
According to Behr, "Classic mechanical engineering materials don't have a timescale. Water doesn't. But blood has all these capsules and droplets that can be stretched. The timescale is the time it takes for one of these blood cells to relax back to its shape once it's stretched."

And if the pump rotor were to shear those droplets, hemoglobin could be freed from the cells and leak into the plasma. At a particular mix, that hemoglobin in the plasma becomes toxic to the patient. The Baylor researchers wanted an application that could analyze for shear, which was obviously important to pump design.

Application: Dynamic Push for Pool Speed

Application In order to improve on Australia's already strong swimming reputation, researchers at the Australian Institute of Sport, CSIRO and Monash University are using computational fluid dynamics in a bid to speed up elite swimmers.
"At the moment we do a lot of high-speed and regular video to identify ways to improve performance, and coaches decide on improvements, but we have no way to analyse the difference our changes make," Mason says.

"If we could scan the swimmer and use motion capture information to discover how they move through the water, and model the changes using CFD, we could scientifically assess the benefit of the changes."

GM Brazil Selects EnSight for Visualization

Post Processing General Motors of Brazil (GMB) has purchased three licenses of CEI’s EnSight to visualize, analyze and communicate simulation results from the company’s Vehicle Synthesis, Analysis and Simulation (VSAS) division. The sale was made by Engineering Simulation and Scientific Software (ESSS), CEI’s South American distributor and Brazil’s leading supplier of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite element analysis (FEA) solutions.

“EnSight gives us good tools to support problem analysis and generate animations that improve communication within our engineering community,” says Roberto P. Ramos, VSAS manager at General Motors of Brazil. “The high-quality animations that we can create in EnSight and the ability to compare different case scenarios is integral to our work.”
