Application: The Difficulty of Simulating Blood Flow

Application Mechanical Engineering magazine is featuring an article with researchers at Rice University who have spent years perfecting a CFD method to simulate blood flow through a blood pump. Because half of blood volume is composed of red blood cells and the rest is liquid plasma, the fluid behaves differently than air or water would.
According to Behr, "Classic mechanical engineering materials don't have a timescale. Water doesn't. But blood has all these capsules and droplets that can be stretched. The timescale is the time it takes for one of these blood cells to relax back to its shape once it's stretched."

And if the pump rotor were to shear those droplets, hemoglobin could be freed from the cells and leak into the plasma. At a particular mix, that hemoglobin in the plasma becomes toxic to the patient. The Baylor researchers wanted an application that could analyze for shear, which was obviously important to pump design.

Application: Dynamic Push for Pool Speed

Application In order to improve on Australia's already strong swimming reputation, researchers at the Australian Institute of Sport, CSIRO and Monash University are using computational fluid dynamics in a bid to speed up elite swimmers.
"At the moment we do a lot of high-speed and regular video to identify ways to improve performance, and coaches decide on improvements, but we have no way to analyse the difference our changes make," Mason says.

"If we could scan the swimmer and use motion capture information to discover how they move through the water, and model the changes using CFD, we could scientifically assess the benefit of the changes."

GM Brazil Selects EnSight for Visualization

Post Processing General Motors of Brazil (GMB) has purchased three licenses of CEIís EnSight to visualize, analyze and communicate simulation results from the companyís Vehicle Synthesis, Analysis and Simulation (VSAS) division. The sale was made by Engineering Simulation and Scientific Software (ESSS), CEIís South American distributor and Brazilís leading supplier of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite element analysis (FEA) solutions.

ďEnSight gives us good tools to support problem analysis and generate animations that improve communication within our engineering community,Ē says Roberto P. Ramos, VSAS manager at General Motors of Brazil. ďThe high-quality animations that we can create in EnSight and the ability to compare different case scenarios is integral to our work.Ē

Application: Seagate Cures PC Hot Spot

Application Seagateís Design Service Center enlisted Coolit thermal & flow analysis software to solve a puzzling thermal problem for a customer's PC design. Though the high density power model was shoe-horned into a small, forced air-cooled cabinet, the unit's 6 cfm fan and large front vent should have been adequate to handle the heat load. But the system's hard drive was overheating.

To pinpoint the trouble source, Seagate built a Coolit model and found that, while some cooling air was making its way to the hard drive, a significant portion was not and, instead, circulating back out the intake vent. Air around the hard drive, essentially, was forming a stagnant pocket up against the top of the enclosure.

Help Desk Anonymous writes "Iím planning on pursuing a doctorate in CFD. Which universities have departments or faculty that specialize in CFD? Iím not specifically sure on what Iíd focus, but I was considering hypersonic flows or rotary-wing applications."

Education: New MSc Programme of Study in CFD

News Cranfield University has launched an MSc course in CFD. The course begins in October 2006. The course aims to offer a programme of study to enhance the skills of the graduate student and professional engineer, providing a detailed introduction to the fundamentals of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) together with an insight into the applications of CFD across the breadth of the subject.

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has grown from a mathematical curiosity to become an essential tool in almost every branch of fluid dynamics, from aerospace propulsion to weather prediction. In design and development, CFD programs are now considered to be standard numerical tools, widely utilised within industry.
