New Software: Flownex 6.8 Improves Performance

Announcements Flownex version 6.8 incorporates several enhancements to the solver for faster and more stable network solutions. Furthermore, a new interpolation routine for coping with interpolation between different speed-lines (with vastly different spreads of mass flow points) on the compressor / turbine charts was implemented.

Several enhancements were also implemented for the Flownex graphical user interface to make Flownex even easier to use.

WilliamsF1 Selects Fluent After Benchmark Tests

ANSYS FLUENT WilliamsF1, a leading Formula 1 team has signed a new deal with Fluent Europe Ltd. to use its world-leading CFD software and services after Fluent won a series of rigorous benchmarking tests. Running from 2005, the agreement will see WilliamsF1 work exclusively with Fluent for an initial three-year period, with an agreement for a further 2 years, assuming Fluent continues to maintain its position as the most advanced CFD software in the world.

Fluent has a long history of success in F1. Eight of the last 10 Formula 1 championship winning teams used Fluent’s CFD software. WilliamsF1 won two of its sixteen World Championships in 1996 and 1997 using FLUENT CFD, but an unbroken partnership between the two has existed dating back to the early 1990s.

Help in Obtaining Fully Developed Laminar Flow Velocity Profile

I am Dhananjay working on Fluid Flow and Heat Transfer Analysis. I tried to find out the fully developed velocity profile for Laminar Flow in a circular cylindrical geometry using STAR-CD version 3.24, which logically should be Parabolic and centre-line velocity in axial direction should be 2 times that of inlet average velocity. I tried with different types meshes viz. Tetrahedral, Hybrid and trimmed. However, I could not get the result. Then I tried to increase the Extrusion layer thickness in radial direction as much as possible. I could see the effect of developing profile and increase in the max centre-line velocity by 1.8 times that of inlet. However, I could not get the result closer to analytical result, by extreme refining of the meshes too. The modelling and grid generation is also checked.What can be the probable reason for this? What is the extrusion layer and its effect?

Please, help me to obtain the result for validation.

FIA Uses CFD to Investigate Overtaking Solution

News FIA president Max Mosley claims the sport's governing body is on the verge of unveiling a solution to Formula 1's lack of overtaking while at the same time permanently reducing downforce without significantly slowing the sport down.

AMD, which is a leading microprocessor manufacturer, is to make available a supercomputer for the FIA to calculate the downforce dimensions required to promote overtaking.

"Various attempts have been made to solve the problem we've got, which is that the car behind needs to be two seconds a lap faster on the average circuit before it can overtake," he said.

Announcements CEI announces the training and technical program for CEIViz ’06, the first international conference for high-performance visualization. CEIViz ’06 will be held at the Disney Coronado Springs Resort in Orlando, Fla., February 22-23, 2006.

The first biennial conference will offer introductory and advanced training on CEI’s EnSight visualization software and the Harpoon extreme mesher, technical papers on leading-edge applications, forums for formal and casual information exchange, and an exhibition featuring the newest technology from major vendors.

“CEIViz ’06 is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to receive training, hear about the world’s most advanced applications, and network with the best international minds in engineering and scientific visualization,” says Kent Misegades, CEI’s president. “From novice to experts, CEIViz ’06 will be the gathering place to learn and share information.”
