Pitt Professor Receives NASA Award for Propulsion Modeling

News Peyman Givi, William Kepler Whiteford Professor of Mechanical Engineering in the University of Pittsburgh School of Engineering, has been awarded the NASA Public Service Medal, which recognizes exceptional contributions to NASA's mission.

Givi received the award “for the development of advanced modeling techniques for designing high-speed and hypersonic propulsion systems for aerospace vehicles.” He was presented with the medal by NASA Langley Director Roy D. Bridges in a private ceremony.

Application: CFD Helps Solve the Heat and Power Problems Raised By Blade Servers

Application As blade servers, a housing for a number of individual minimally-packaged computer motherboard "blades", become more powerful and businesses pack more and more of them into data centers, cooling the thin devices is becoming more of a challenge. A rack of blade servers can generate as much as 14 kilowatts, nearly the heat given off by two electric ovens.

The simplest solution is to add air conditioning capacity, but this is expensive and can't prevent failures on the inevitable occasions when the air conditioning temporarily fails. While adding air conditioning may be necessary, it also makes sense to evaluate the airflow conditions in the room in order to determine whether or not the existing capacity is being effectively utilized.

Cummins Utilizes India CFD Group for Engine Design

News In India, the two-year-old Cummins Research & Technology India center in Pune is playing an important role in helping the company slash development costs and time in its bid to best such arch-rivals as Caterpillar Inc. (CAT ) in building a new generation of diesel engines. Cummins is tapping India's immense pool of skilled, low-cost engineers.

The center's 100 engineers specialize in 3-D computer modeling and simulated testing of engines and components. They collaborate with R&D teams in each of Cummins' 20 other development centers worldwide. "We're involved in just about everything Cummins is doing," says John O'Halloran, a 12-year Cummins veteran dispatched in June, 2003, to build and staff the center.

New Software: OmegaChart v3.0 Released

News The OmegaChart 3.0 a FlowChart generator converts a FORTRAN source code (f77 & f90, fixed or free form) to their FlowChart equivalence. The generated flowchart is viewable through Microsoft Excel or Microsoft Internet Explorer.

OmegaChart 3.0 is a useful tool for untangle behind-the-scenes programming logic in a messy spaghetti code and therefore generate visual documentation of the execution route. While other analysis tools only provide "assembly level" info, such as calling trees or variables cross referencing, OmegaChart provide detailed "module level" logic such as loops, if-elseif-endif constructs and select-case constructs.

My name is Maria Lourdes Aguja and I am a masters student at the Hamburg University of Technology in Germany.

I am doing my masters thesis now and am using CFX to simulate the results and findings of Dipl.-Ing. Andreas Gorton-Hülgerth from the Technischen Universität Graz in his paper 'Messung und Berechnung der Geschwindigkeitfelder und Partikelbahn im Gaszyklon' dated December 1998. It's about gas flow in a cyclone. His paper is our reference as he worked with a cyclone unit with D=0.40 meter and H=1.0 meter. The aim of my paper is to successfully adopt his approach and apply this to an industrial-size unit.
