EPA Awards Contact to Simulate and Measure Air Quality

News Alion Science and Technology Corp. of McLean won a five-year, $49.6 million contract from the Environmental Protection Agency to provide technical support in developing methods to determine air quality and assess the effect of atmospheric pollutants and other toxic materials on human health.
As part of the contract work, Alion also will write the simulation program that analyzes the test results. The program combines computational fluid dynamics, a simulation of the flow of air around a solid body, with how humans breathe air in and out and a statistical model that measures the variability of particulate concentrations in air, Amos said.

Events: Quality & Reliability of CFD Simulations Seminar
Posted Tue July 12, 2005 @09:40AM

Announcements NAFEMS and ERCOFTAC will host a joint awareness seminar titled "Quality and Reliability of CFD Simulations II: Industrial Challenges" on Tuesday September 13, 2005 at the University of Nottingham, UK.

Industrial, environmental and academic applications of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) are increasingly relied upon to provide qualitative and quantitative data for design, safety assessment and understanding of complex flow systems. Direct validation against comprehensive test data is often impractical. The level of confidence which can be placed on the results of CFD is therefore an important and current issue in engineering simulation.

This seminar brings together users of CFD to examine issues of accuracy, reliability and trust in the context of practical applications in engineering design, the environment, and health and safety management. The underlying theme is the useful exploitation of CFD in the face of uncertainty and complexity. The presentations will illustrate, through case studies, how to reduce uncertainty in CFD and how to derive most benefit from the technology, as well as raising awareness of current initiatives to enhance the quality and trust of CFD simulation.

Announcements Learn how to use this popular numerical library for the Finite Volume method with the help of expert OpenFoam developers. OpenFoam allows the solution of rather general system of transport equations by the Finite Volume method, differential operators and time integration schemes are implemented on this C++ library which can handle models meshed on general polyhedra.

OpenFoam provides parallelization by domain decomposition and comes along with powerful pre and post processing tools.

The workshop takes place at the SIMDI05 conferance in Gothenburg, Sweden 7-8 September 2005.

CD-adapco CD-adapco is pleased to announce their participation in the 7th World Congress of Chemical Engineering, from the 10th - 14th July at the SECC in Glasgow. CD-adapco will be exhibiting in the "Hub" and profiling their Chemical focused CFD simulation products, including STAR-CD, the world leading CFD package for complex physics flow simulation.

Simon Lo, CD-adapco's Chemical and Process Sector Manager, is enthused about the conference: "As the boundaries between the traditional chemical engineering disciplines continue to fall, Computational Fluid Dynamics is increasingly finding new and exciting territories in which to expand. The World Congress of Chemical Engineering is a great opportunity for CD-adapco to touch base with the wider Chemical Engineering community."

Transonic Heat Transfer Problem in Concentric Pipe
Posted Thu July 07, 2005 @01:07PM
Print version Email story Tweet story
Help Desk ejazkd writes "Hello,

I am trying to solve a transonic heat transfer problem in a concentric tube arrangment. I am having a problem in setting boundary conditions and in achieveing convergence.

At the inlet, a mass inlet boundary condition is applied, and on the outlet a pressure outlet BC is applied, which should be when in the transonic domain. But I am bit confused with supplying the pressure values.

Can somebody guide me on how to achieve convergence in this transonic heat transfer problem?

Regards,
ejaz ahmed"
