ANSYS FLUENT Fluent Inc., the worldwide leader in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software and services, announces today the release of FlowLab 1.2, its student-friendly fluids laboratory educational software. FlowLab is a unique piece of software that uses the power of flow visualization through classical CFD exercises to teach basic fluid mechanics principles in the engineering classroom.

The software runs Fluent's general purpose CFD code, FLUENT 6, and pre-processor, GAMBIT 2, in the background, with a user-friendly, student-specific graphical user interface (GUI) as its front end. Students have been using FlowLab as a complement to traditional laboratory exercises for four years and this release is directed at extending the usability of the software as well as introducing a variety of new features.

Help Desk musallba writes "I am using CFX program version 5.7,and I need to clarify the required steps for importing a geometry file (created through DesignModeler Model in ANSYS Workbench 8.1) into the CFX-Pre.

My company access to the ANSYS Workbench 8.1 does not have the option to utilize the CFX-Mesh in order to create the GTM files, however, we can create the geometry file in the DesignModeler and save as a gdb file. Then, from here, would anybody please advice me in how to proceed to CFX-Pre and import the created geometry file from ANSYS Workbench (DesignModeler or Project Page)."

ANSYS FLUENT Fluent Inc. invites you to attend our Diesel Emission and Aftertreatment Modeling with FLUENT Webinar, April 7, at 2 p.m. There is no cost to attend this online seminar.

Modeling flow and reactions in automotive aftertreatment systems has become very important for automobile and engine manufacturers due to the stringent emission regulations. Recent developments within FLUENT 6.2 provide engineers with valuable tools to simulate processes in aftertreatment devices, including catalyst reactions, particulate loading and regeneration, and cold-start process. In this presentation we will cover a description of the current capabilities in FLUENT 6.2 regarding catalyst reaction, soot loading and regeneration, and light-off prediction.

News Fast, faithful animation of water, gasses, smoke, lava and molten metals in movies, computer games and advertisements has long been one of the biggest challenges of animation.

An Australian IT article describes how CSIRO researchers have joined forces with world-renowned Korean animators in a four-year project that aims to produce tools to speed up the process, and provide images so realistic viewers will reach for their umbrellas.

"We're taking the equations used to model complex fluid interactions, such as the aerodynamics of aircraft or the behaviour of mined ores in crushing mills, and applying them to animating fluids for motion pictures and computer games," CSIRO mathematical and information sciences business development manager Kevin Cryan says.

Update [30mar2005]: Examples of CSIRO animations can be downloaded here.
