New Software: CD-adapco Releases STAR-CCM+ Box Set
Posted Fri March 18, 2005 @04:22PM
Print version Email story Tweet story
News CD-adapco, the leading provider of full-spectrum and CAD-embedded Computational Fluid Dynamics, has announced the release of the world's first fully integrated process for polyhedral CFD. The first official release of the STAR-CCM+ Box Set combines CD-adapco's technology leading STAR-CCM+ solver with STAR-Design, which includes the world's first commercially available polyhedral mesher.

STAR-Design, CD-adapco's fully functional parametric solid modeler, allows polyhedral meshes to be created at the click of a button. Based on the same Parasolid kernel that powers many leading CAD packages, STAR-Design is both powerful and easily accessible. Using an intuitive interface, even a casual user can easily build, mesh and run an industrial strength CFD simulation. Using STAR-Design, polyhedral meshes can be easily generated from the created (or imported) CAD geometry at the click of a button.

Application: Simulation Helps Office Workers Stay Warm in Winter, Cool in Summer
Posted Fri March 18, 2005 @10:17AM

Application Engineers at Olof Granlund Oy, Helsinki, Finland, substantially improved the thermal comfort of a new building by using computer simulation during the design process to identify and fix air circulation and other problems. The energy analysis programs usually used to evaluate thermal comfort in a new building only predict average temperatures for a given space, so it's impossible to determine if, for example, it will be uncomfortably cold near a window.

Granlund engineers overcame this problem by using CFX-5 computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis software to provide temperature, airflow velocity and pressure predictions at any point in the building. Engineers first used this method to model existing buildings and found the simulation predictions to be useful for design process.

Application: Simulation Explores Spread of Virus in an Airplane
Posted Thu March 17, 2005 @10:28AM
Print version Email story Tweet story
Application Occupational Hazards has posted an article on the use of CFD to simulate the spread of virus within the cabin of a commercial airliner.

The question of infectious diseases spreading through an aircraft's ventilation system is a serious concern to air travelers and flight crews. Increased interest in this issue by airline employees prompted the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to sponsor a study by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to consider new methods to investigate the potential for airborne disease transmission on commercial flights.

Because of the difficulty of testing in an actual aircraft cabin during flight conditions, the primary focus of this project has been to perform numerical simulation of the cabin airflow. A numerical simulation can predict the effect of conditions that could never be tested, and many different conditions can be examined in far less time and at a lower cost than would be required for physical testing. In addition, simulation provides results at every point in the computational domain while testing results are limited to the areas and conditions that can be measured.

Renault F1 Team Racing Ahead with STAR-CD
Posted Tue March 15, 2005 @10:57AM
Print version Email story Tweet story
News CD-adapco would like to offer our warmest congratulations to our friends and partners in the Renault F1 Team. Justifying their position as pre-race favorites, Renault drivers Giancarlo Fisichella and Fernando Alonso completely dominated the opening race of the 2005 F1 season. Starting from Pole Position, Fisichella led the Australian GP from start to finish in a faultless demonstration of precision race driving. He was joined on the podium by team-mate Fernando Alonso who narrowly missed second place in what many observers judged "the drive of the day".

As an Official Supplier of CFD and CAE technology to the Renault F1 Team, CD-adapco products continue to play a critical role in the ever improving performances of the team. The Renault F1 Team's Technical Director Bob Bell commented: "CFD technology plays a fundamental role in the design and development of a modern F1 car. The ability to simulate the behavior and performance of our designs quickly and accurately has a direct influence on our on-track performance. We are pleased to continue our relationship with CD-adapco, an acknowledged leader in this field."
