News ACUITIV™ Software, a leading provider of next-generation Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) visualization software, has announced that John Zink Company LLC, a Koch Chemical Technology Group LLC company, has selected ACUITIV’s computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technology to enhance its visualization capabilities.

John Zink Company’s selection of ACUITIV’s CFD visualization software was based on its superior post-processing capabilities and ease of use. It extends the use of ACUITIV’s visualization product into state-of-the-art environmental technologies such as low-NOx burners, flares and thermal oxidizers offered by John Zink to the refining, petrochemical and power industries.

News Fluent Inc., the worldwide leader in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software and services, presents a Naval/Ocean Engineering Webinar on Thursday, September 23, 2004, at 2 p.m.

In this free webinar you will find out how flow modeling can provide full-scale analysis results or complement other fluid dynamics analysis methods and tools to meet the demanding needs of marine industry applications such as:

  • ship hull hydrodynamics
  • marine propellers
  • fully non-linear free-surface waves
  • stern wakes
  • flows in and around equipment on ships and ocean structures, and more.

The benefits of flow modeling technology will be described, along with case study examples and live demonstrations of the tools at work.

Application: Simulation Helps Improve Oil Refinery Operations
Posted Mon September 13, 2004 @08:31AM

Application By Dr Peter Witt,
Research Scientist,
CSIRO Minerals

During oil processing, heavier products are broken down by high temperatures into lighter products in cokers. This “cracking” process strips off lighter liquid hydrocarbon products such as naphtha and gas oils, leaving heavier coke behind. The challenge that CSIRO Minerals has been helping Syncrude resolve is how to best reduce coke deposits that build-up in their fluid coker stripper while maintaining or improving hydrocarbon stripping.

CSIRO is Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, one of the world's largest and most diverse scientific global research organizations. Syncrude Canada Ltd. is the world's largest producer of crude oil from oil sands and the largest single source producer in Canada.

CSIRO Minerals is a long time user of CFX and in collaboration with the Clean Power from Lignite CRC developed the fluidized bed model in CFX-4. CFX, because of its robust multiphase capability and its ability to be extended into new application areas, is used extensively by CSIRO Minerals in undertaking complex CFD modeling of multiphase, combustion and reacting processes in the mineral processing, chemical and petrochemical industries.

News In a move bringing together the renowned user experience of Apple Macintosh with the industry’s leading grid generator and postprocessor, Pointwise, Inc. and Intelligent Light are pleased to jointly announce the upcoming availability of their respective CFD (computational fluid dynamics) pre- and postprocessing software, Gridgen and FIELDVIEW, for Mac OS X. The ports are strongly motivated by their common customers at NASA who have begun using Macs for CFD meshing, postprocessing, and visualization. Mac OS X and Xserve provide a powerful and productive environment to handle the compute-intensive tasks and support workgroup data needs, while the Power Mac G5 is a desktop machine people enjoy working with. This is a powerful combination Gridgen and FIELDVIEW users alike will appreciate.

New Software: AxSTREAM Adds Low Pressure Turbine Blade Design
Posted Wed September 08, 2004 @09:14AM
Print version Email story Tweet story
News SoftInWay, Inc. a front-end digital prototyping and turbomachinery design company and developer of AxSTREAM™ - a professional tool for rapid axial turbine flow path design, has introduced a new software tool for extremely long blade design.

The design of steam turbine low pressure (LP) blades is more difficult than normal blade design due to large radial dimensions that in turn cause high centrifugal loads on the blade. AxSTREAM is able to handle such cases and successfully lays the foundation for 3D CFD analysis aimed at building an aerodynamically perfect flow path providing reliable blade operation.

An advantage of AxSTREAM's blade design is the capability to export the blade geometry to any CFD solver for high-fidelity 3D CFD analysis and to import the 3D simulation results back into AxSTREAM. This capability accelerates the data preparation procedure for 3D CFD modeling.
