New AIAA CFD Standard Available for Public Review

News A new AIAA Standards document dealing with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is currently available for public review and comment. The document, AIAA Recommended Practice — The CFD General Notation System - Standard Interface Data Structures, was developed by the CGNS Subcommittee of the AIAA CFD Committee on Standards.

The CFD General Notation System (CGNS) is a standard for recording and recovering computer data associated with the numerical solution of the equations of fluid dynamics. The intent is to facilitate the exchange of CFD data between sites, between applications codes, and across computing platforms, and to stabilize the archiving of CFD data.

STAR-CD Takes Advantage of AMD 64-bit Processors

CD-adapco The CD adapco Group’s latest release of its CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) software STAR-CD is now able to run even larger CFD cases using the AMD Opteron™ processor that enables simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing.

It has been possible to run STAR-CD cases on 64-bit processors for many years, but with the AMD Opteron processor, it is now possible for STAR-CD users to also run a 64-bit processor within the Linux environment. Most CFD codes today will only run in 32-bit compatibility mode, whereas STAR-CD has native 64-bit compatibility on this platform.

The main advantage of running STAR-CD using AMD Opteron processors is that it is possible to process problems of almost unlimited size, subject only to the amount of memory that can be inserted into a processor and the total memory available in a cluster.

“The CD adapco Group is working hard to facilitate successful engineering performance for its clients. With AMD Opteron processor-based systems, users of STAR-CD have a scalable platform for CFD problems of almost infinite size,” says Steve Feldman, director of software development, CD adapco Group. “The high memory bandwidth system allows STAR-CD to use multiple shared memory CPU’s efficiently”.

Application: CFD Aids Space Station Lifeboat Design

The use of computer simulation to help build it right the first time is one major reason why the estimated costs of building the X-38, also known as the “lifeboat” for the International Space Station, are less than one-tenth the cost of previous space vehicles. In one typical example, Lockheed Martin engineers are using CFD software to ensure the effectiveness of the climate control system of the space vehicle. The engineers built a computer model of the X-38 and its contents, and used CFD to simulate the airflow and heat transfer throughout the vehicle’s cabin, eliminating the costs of building and testing a physical prototype. Preliminary simulations showed some areas with potential ventilation problems due to equipment blocking airflows.

NOTE: The X-38 project is currently suspended and is under review as a result of funding issues associated with the International Space Station (ISS).

The X-38 is designed for use on the International Space Station (ISS) as an emergency crew return vehicle (see Figure 1.). It is for this purpose that the term "lifeboat" is used. One of the goals of the X-38 program is to build a human spacecraft for an order of magnitude less cost than ever before. In the late 1980’s, prior to the X-38, one crew return vehicle project was estimated to cost as much as 2 billion dollars. The X-38 project is expected to build and test fly two prototypes in space for 90 million dollars. Several factors will contribute to the reduced cost. For example, the X-38 uses a lifting body design derived from the U.S. Air Force's X-24A experimental project in the mid-1960’s. Additionally, parts of the X-38 will be bought over the counter, using existing, rather than newly designed technology - a marked difference from past NASA spacecraft.

Announcements The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Pune and the IITZeus group of the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IITB), are jointly organizing a five-day workshop and training programme on CFD during Aug 23 to 27, 2004.

The workshop will cover expert lectures on the fundamental aspects of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), e.g., grid generation techniques, compressible & incompressible flow, boundary layer, turbulence modeling, multiphase flow, conjugate heat transfer, numerical discretization schemes and solution methods. The lectures will also highlight the application aspects of CFD in industries and environmental & water resource engineering.

The training will involve hands on sessions on CFDTutor, CFDExpert and PHOENICS.

Research: Density Functional Theory Simplifies Multiphase Simulation

News Traditional Eulerian multiphase simulation suffers from numerical problems at phase interfaces due to the large local density variation (eg. 1000:1 for water/air). The result is numerical instability and the need for a highly refined mesh at the (usually unknown/moving) interface location.

Density functional theory, however, describes the multicomponent multiphase mixture continuously without density jumps at interfacial surfaces. This is achieved by the introduction into the Helmholz energy, or into the entropy, square component density gradient terms. As a result the hydrodynamics of multiphase mixtures is described in a unified way meaning the governing system of equations is the same at any point in space.
