Research: Density Functional Theory Simplifies Multiphase Simulation
Posted Fri July 09, 2004 @10:19AM
Print version Email story Tweet story
News Traditional Eulerian multiphase simulation suffers from numerical problems at phase interfaces due to the large local density variation (eg. 1000:1 for water/air). The result is numerical instability and the need for a highly refined mesh at the (usually unknown/moving) interface location.

Density functional theory, however, describes the multicomponent multiphase mixture continuously without density jumps at interfacial surfaces. This is achieved by the introduction into the Helmholz energy, or into the entropy, square component density gradient terms. As a result the hydrodynamics of multiphase mixtures is described in a unified way meaning the governing system of equations is the same at any point in space.

Grid Generation TetGen version 1.3, a quality tetrahedral mesh generator and 3D Delaunay triangulator, has been released.

TetGen generates exact Delaunay tetrahedralizations, constrained Delaunay tetrahedralizations, and quality tetrahedral meshes. The latter are quality conforming Delaunay and nicely graded if no input angle is smaller than 60 degree.

The development of TetGen is supported by the pdelib project of Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics in the research group of Numerical Mathematics and Scientific Computing.

Announcements NAFEMS, the International Association for the Engineering Analysis Community, will hold its 10th World Congress on the island of Malta from the 17th – 20th May 2005. The conference will bring together world leading industrial practitioners, consultancies, academic researchers and software developers with a common interest in engineering analysis, finite element analysis, and computational fluid dynamics. The event will provide an exclusive insight into established methods and best practices, along with a vision of how future technologies will have an increasing impact on the product development process.

NAFEMS are now inviting submission of papers for inclusion in the Congress programme. Papers are being accepted from all areas of engineering simulation, under the following broad headings:

  • Practical Applications of Simulation
  • Analysis as an Engineering Tool
  • Simulation Techniques & Technologies
  • Successful use of Analysis through Effective Training
  • Numerical Methods

With a reputation for technical excellence and innovation, the NAFEMS World Congress is the ideal forum to share experiences, exchange ideas, and gain recognition for innovative work in the simulation field.
