BMW ORACLE Racing, is employing the best possible technology in its racing yacht design development. In order to study the dynamics of flow, the design team has selected the CD adapco Group, the leading global provider of computational engineering solutions, to provide CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) software.

“For this demanding work we require precision, production capability and some specific functionality only found in CD adapco Group’s software. We work the software hard to achieve an optimal design for our sailors to take into battle for the America’s Cup,” says Ian Burns, BMW ORACLE Racing, Design Coordinator. “By working alongside CD adapco Group we gain a great advantage from having the right tool combined with a great team. We all share a common goal: success.”

The Waterman Group will be applying CFD modelling to areas of its consultancy services including internal ventilation, to design energy efficient natural ventilation schemes, and external flow modelling, which allows the company to accurately predict pedestrian comfort. The company has been involved in the design of a number of major projects, both in the UK and abroad. FLUENT CFD software is currently being used to predict airflow movement to assess occupant comfort for an atrium design study at Saint Katharines Dock (K2) in London, and to model internal ventilation for the White City project in London.

PathScale and Absoft Corporation have announced the results of a collaborative engineering initiative to assure optimum compatibility and interoperability between the PathScale EKO Compiler Suite for Linux-based AMD64 compatible systems and the Absoft Fx2™ Fortran/C/C++ Debugging Solution.

"Absoft has worked closely with PathScale to achieve seamless interoperability between our respective products, and we are now certifying the PathScale EKO Compiler Suite version 1.2 for use with our Fx2 Debugging Solution for Fortran and C/C++," said Wood Lotz, president of Absoft. "Internal tests at Absoft have verified that the advanced optimizations of the PathScale compilers are really quite fast and we are comfortable recommending our Fx2 Debugging Solution with PathScale compilers to Linux application developers."

Michael Phelps is aiming to emulate the unsurpassed feat of the 1972 US Olympian, Mark Spitz by bringing the US home at least 7 Gold medals in the Athens Swimming Pool. While doing this, Phelps will be wearing a Speedo Fastskin FSII swimsuit, designed in no small part by the use of the FLUENT CFD code. The FLUENT CFD code has been utilized extensively to carry out a huge range of hydrodynamic flow simulations around specific elite athletes. The split CFD/underwater image of Phelps used in the Wallpaper perfectly shows how contours of frictional drag on Phelps' body while he is in the glide position can be simulated to a lifelike resolution today. This is an exciting milestone in the development of applying CFD to real world competitive scenarios.
