Application: CFD Used on Novel Water Turbine

Application Machine Design is carrying the story of the use of CFD in the design of a new water turbine. Engineers at Sigma Designs Co., Springfield, N.J., used CosmosFloWorks CFD and FEAprogram CosmosWorks to improve the design.

"We created a single model, added boundary conditions to determine hydrodynamic forces, and distributed them across the blades," says Gerald Lynch, Sigma Design president.

Application: CFD Helps DaimlerChrysler Accelerate Return to NASCAR

With 16 drivers competing in NASCAR's Nextel circuit – including Ryan Newman, who notched eight wins and 11 pole positions last year – it is easy to forget that only three years ago DaimlerChrysler's Dodge division was returning after a 25-year absence from stock car racing's most prestigious tour.

To gain a perspective on just how far Dodge has come, go back to 1999: DaimlerChrysler had fewer than 500 days to design and build a competitive car for the 43rd Daytona 500 in February 2001. The aerodynamics team accelerated its work with computational fluid dynamics (CFD), advanced visualization, and scale-model wind-tunnel development to augment traditional full-scale wind-tunnel and on-track testing. This combination of processes has since become the standard for DaimlerChrysler race programs and commercial cars.

Events: Vehicle Thermal Management Demonstration at JSAE 2004

News Flowmaster Group in partnership with CRC Solutions Corporation, Flowmaster’s value added reseller in Japan, will be giving a series of demonstrations on simulating the thermo-fluid dynamic aspects involved with vehicle thermal management.

Taking place on Stand 26 in the IT & software zone the demonstrations will focus on the need to simulate the thermal interactions between the under hood fluid systems found in the vehicle. Such systems include: engine cooling, lubrication, under hood airflow and air conditioning.

“Of particular importance is the packaging of the cooling pack. With Space in the engine bay at a premium, heat exchangers such as the radiator, oil cooler and air conditioning condenser often overlap each other. As a consequence the component with the most overlapping, experiences airflow at a higher temperature than desired, which can impair the performance of the system it resides in” – explains Paul Burns, Automotive Product Manager, Flowmaster Group.

Two Phase (Liquid and Gas) Problem

Help Desk I need help in solving a two phase problem. I have a closed box that is half filled with liquid and has ullage space(with air) above it. I am using CFD-ACE to model flow and heat transfer. What is the most appropriate way to solve this? I tried to use VOF, but it requires a very small time step which is not feasible for my problem. Also, the two-fluid module does not seem to work in conjunction with the heat transfer module. I also tried just flow and heat transfer (without vof or two-fluid models) by making two separate domains and assigning different properties. It doesnt seem to work either. Can anyone suggest what to do here?

Application: Reducing Infiltration Through Cold Store Entrances

Ingress of warm moist air during cold-store door opening is a major issue in refrigeration plants, as it increases energy consumption and can also cause an undesirable rise in product temperature. Moisture infiltration itself can produce food safety problems in chill stores and can jeopardize personnel safety in frozen stores as the moisture turns to ice.

The British Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has commissioned the University of Bristol (FRPERC) to look at this problem in partnership with Anglo Dutch Meats (UK) Ltd; ACS&T Wolverhampton Ltd., Thermoscreens Ltd., Northern Foods Plc and Ballymoney Foods Ltd. The aim of the project, which is part of the LINK programme, is to reduce infiltration through doorways and thereby reduce the effects on temperature control, safety and energy consumption.
