NAFEMS, The International Association for the Engineering Analysis Community, is currently working on expanding its North American Chapter. With some 700 member companies worldwide, the organization is the only truly independent authority on the use of computer modelling and simulation methods, and is widely respected throughout the analysis world.
To this end, the NAFEMS North American Chapter will be holding meetings in a number of locations over the coming period. Many senior individuals from major corporations and vendors, as well as analysis specialists have already asked to be involved, and will be attending these meetings. We extend an open invitation to all interested parties to attend.
The first of these meetings will take place in the Marriott Suites, Anaheim, California on Wednesday 19th May 2004.

The CD adapco Group, leading provider of CAE solutions, has recently released STAR CCM+, a next generation CFD (computational fluid dynamics) code for flow analysis.
Terms such as ‘next generation’, although often overused, can be applied with complete confidence to STAR CCM+. Unlike the many legacy CFD codes currently on the market, it has been developed by a group of experts who were determined to start with a blank sheet of paper and ‘do the job properly’.
The result is a code that offers outstanding ease-of-use delivered through an object-based tree-structured GUI, which guides even the most novice user through the set-up and analysis of a CFD problem. Utilizing the latest numerical algorithms including an advanced pre-conditioned coupled and segregated solver and state-of-the-art software coding, the new product brings unheard levels of accuracy, reliability and flexibility to the CFD engineer.

Computer simulation has greatly shortened the path towards the development of ultra fine water mist fire suppression technology for NanoMist Systems, LLC. NanoMist is the trade name for the proprietary process technology of producing, scaling, transporting, and delivering the ultra-fine fine water mist system.
The fire suppression chemical Halon 1301 was banned after it was identified as an ozone-depleting substance and the search for newer and safer fire suppression agents was renewed. Amongst several other clean agents, the non-ozone depleting chemical HFC-227ea is the most popular agent in use today. It has some limitations, however, because of toxic by-products which may often reach harmful levels. It also has a global warming potential. From both an environmental and toxicity point of view, ultra fine water mist is an ideal compound. It may be potential permanent solution for fire suppression technology.

Pointwise has released Gridgen Version 15.02, a recent update
of their CFD meshing software. Two new capabilities in the software add to Gridgen’s ability to read
native format CAD files and handle sloppy geometry models. Specifically, a Native CAD Reader for
Unigraphics and a visual tool for identifying gaps and overlaps were added.
Available since early 2002, Gridgen’s Native CAD Readers provide the ability to read geometry from
a CAD system’s native files. Native access avoids translation errors that can occur when using open
standard file formats. Because native access is integrated into Gridgen, there’s no plug-in that an
engineer has to execute from within the CAD system. In fact, use of the CAD system and its license
are completely unnecessary – Gridgen reads the file directly. Native CAD Readers are available for
CATIA® V4, Pro/ENGINEER®, STEP, and now Unigraphics®. Based on an early trial of this
technology, engineers at Lockheed Martin in Dallas, Texas, plan to incorporate Gridgen's
Pro/ENGINEER Native CAD Reader into their CFD meshing processes.
