Speedo's research and development team began the development of FASTSKIN FSII after the Sydney Olympics by evaluating emerging engineering technologies that would enable them to take swimsuit design to a new level. Speedo identified a technology never before used in swimwear development - Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).

Integrated with Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire, CFdesign puts full-functionality fluid flow and heat transfer simulation upfront in the product development process, where product performance can be optimized and product innovations discovered.

Visitors to CeBIT can participate in live demonstrations of CFdesign throughout the event in Hall 5, Exhibit C18.

EnSight and EnSight Gold are software for visualizing, analyzing and communicating computational results for automotive, aerospace, chemical and scientific visualization problems. EnLiten, EnVideo and EnVe are free software packages that provide an easy way to use EnSight animations for collaboration and communication.

CEI officially supports the Panther (10.3) version of Mac OS X, which includes support from Apple for X11 graphics. The company recommends that Jaguar (10.2) users upgrade to Panther for its software enhancements and improved X11 support. EnSight, EnSight Gold and EnLiten are currently X11-based applications. EnVideo and EnVe are already native Mac OS applications.

The Group will be demonstrating the latest version of its CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) code STAR-CD, which has enhanced capability for simulating the wide range of flow processes in and around vehicles including external aerodynamics, underhood thermal management, engine and aftertreatment processes, climate control and more.

The company’s next generation CFD code STAR CCM+, which uses “computational continuum mechanics” methodology will also be demonstrated. This has the ability to achieve fast solutions on arbitrary polyhedral meshes, and provides object-oriented architecture, enhanced multiphysics and state-of-the-art coupled solver technology.

The award recognizes LANL's advanced visualization capabilities within the new Metropolis Center for Modeling and Simulation. The center supports more than 300 physicists, computer scientists and engineers. Completed in 2001, the visualization facilities allow scientists to see and understand the results of the large data sets they produce – often hundreds of millions of cells in size.

The CFD Outreach Initiative has been organised by the Institute of CFD, based at the Universities of Oxford and Reading, and the European Research Community on Flow, Turbulence and Combustion (ERCOFTAC).

The initiative aims to put SMEs in touch with the most appropriate expert for their particular problem, and will give the companies access to the same expertise as their larger competitors - but without upfront fees.

Now the Outreach is hosting an Open Day to discuss, present and offer advice on fluid dynamics, aimed at small and medium sized companies. The open day will concentrate on the commercial advantages of CFD for small companies by presenting case studies which illustrate how small businesses have derived real commercial benefit from the application of CFD.

The meeting, which is free to all participants, will be held Monday 22nd March 2004 at the University of Reading Black Horse House.
