Grid Generation: Surface Wrapping Capability Drastically Reduces Meshing Time

News The CD adapco Group, leading provider of advanced computationally-based engineering solutions, announces a unique capability for surface wrapping in its CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) software STAR-CD.

When preparing a model for a CFD analysis, surfaces need to be closed in order to generate mesh. The process of surface wrapping therefore typically involves taking raw CAD data, closing holes in geometry, joining disconnected surfaces, removing interior and overlapping surfaces. The surface wrapping capability in pro-STAR, the pre- and post-processing package for STAR-CD, automatically ‘shrink-wraps’ a closed surface mesh made of triangles and/or quadrangles onto the geometry. The engineer simply takes the model, which can be an assembly of various sources such as native CAD (CATIA V4, CATIA V5, Unigraphics, Pro/ENGINEER), IGES, STEP AP203 ISO Standard, Parasolid, STL (Stereolythography), VDA-FS and NASTRAN formats and then shrink-wraps the surface.

News CFD Research Corporation (CFDRC), the leading provider of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Multiphysics Software, announced today the spin-off of its commercial Software Products Division. Six products (including CFD-ACE+ and CFD-FASTRAN) and the associated intellectual property assets, personnel, and facilities have been acquired by ESI Software, the leading supplier of PAM-CRASH, PAM-STAMP, virtual prototyping, and manufacturing processes software.

The two companies also established a collaborative development initiative, which will provide the most versatile and comprehensive simulation capabilities for a wide range of industries, including Automotive, Aerospace, Biomedical, Biodiagnostics, Fuel Cells, Materials, Microfluidics, MEMS, Plasma, and Semiconductor Equipment and Processes.

The transaction was completed on 21 January 2004 and included notably software products together with all intellectual property assets, personnel, and facilities as well as customer base and all related commercial rights.

News Marine CFD 2005: International Conference on Marine Computational Fluid Dynamics will be held at Southampton University, England, 30 & 31 March 2005. The conference will be organised and run by The Royal Institution of Naval Architects on behalf of Riviera Maritime Media Ltd.

Additionally, the proceedings are now available from the 3rd International Conference on Marine CFD that was held in London on 6&7 February 2003. The conference was organised on behalf of Riviera Maritime Media Ltd by The Royal Institution of Naval Architects. Proceedings are available as bound volumes or on CD-ROM priced at £115.00 (£95 if you are a member of RINA)

Application: Better Foam with CFX

Invented by Otto Bayer in 1937, Polyurethane (PUR) foam is an extremely common material, especially in our cars (bumpers, dashboards, seats, etc.) and in our homes (as insulating material for walls, pipes and refrigerators). PUR is produced by mixing alcohol and isocyanates. The resulting reaction generates gas bubbles which become trapped in the curing compound.

Pre-formed foam plastics are produced by casting processes, where the reactants are mixed just before they enter the mould. When foaming large structures, the curing process may start while the reactants are still being fed into the form, which can result in poor product quality with undesirable voids. To ensure successful filling, both the filling and foaming processes must therefore be optimized together.

The Emissions Modeling seminar will take place on Friday, February 20, from 10 a.m to 2 p.m., in Plymouth, MI.

This seminar will touch on various topics within this broad segment, showing how CFD modeling with Fluent can assist manufacturers in improving emissions performance.
