Application: New Developments in CFD Extend Application to Pelton Turbines

Thanks to developments in simulation methods over the last twenty years, the optimization of the hydraulic design of reaction-type water turbines (Francis and Kaplan turbines) is now primarily carried out by means of numerical flow simulation. In the design process, numerical flow simulation provides the engineer with a rapid and reliable tool to obtain a better understanding of the flow and to quickly examine various design options in order to select the optimum configuration.

A similar move towards the use of simulation methods is now taking place in the field of Pelton turbines. Until now, the flow in Pelton turbines has not been analyzed in such detail as the flow in Francis and Kaplan turbines. One of the reasons for this is that the flow patterns and the hydraulic losses are very difficult to observe and quantify by experiments. This is due to the very complex flow processes that occur in Pelton turbines, which include pressure losses, secondary flows, jets, film flow, free surfaces, spray formation, ventilation losses, unsteadiness, and complex interaction between the components.

Grid Generation Help Requested

I want help for generating a grid for a rotating rotor of an axial flow turbine. Rotor has 6 untwisted straight blades. I am using GAMBIT application. I do not find any tutorial relevant to my geometry. Please if anybody can give me a link.

Application: CFD Helps Engineers Improve Ferrari Formula One Aerodynamics

Computer simulation has helped engineers at Ferrari make significant improvements to the aerodynamics of a Formula One vehicle. The simulation was used to fine-tune the aerodynamics of a new roll-hoop structure required by a recent rule changes. Because of the compressed design cycles required in Formula One racing, there wouldn’t have been time to evaluate alternatives if wind tunnel testing had been the primary design tool. Instead, engineers used computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to model the configuration of the upper rear bodywork and optimize its design. In order to minimize simulation time, a reduced-domain simulation was performed in the vicinity of the new structure, with the conditions on the boundaries of the domain coming from an existing CFD model. During the CFD analysis, several sophisticated modeling methods were used to ensure an accurate solution, including the Reynolds Stress Model (RSM) and non-equilibrium wall functions for the turbulent flow. Subsequent air tunnel testing revealed that panels whose design was based on the simulation met the design objectives; they were essentially invisible aerodynamically.

In 2001, the body governing Formula 1 racing required that, for safety reasons, the roll hoop structure be capable of supporting higher vertical and lateral loads. This requirement forced all F1 teams to revise their chassis structures and bodywork in the vicinity of the inlet to the airbox snorkel. It ultimately became necessary for each team to re-optimize aerodynamically all of the upper surfaces of the car aft of the cockpit.

Fluent Couples with LMS SYSNOISE for Acoustics Modeling

ANSYS FLUENT Fluent and LMS International announced today the world leading Vibro-acoustics software LMS SYSNOISE Rev 5.6, released in April 2003, supports import of transient data from FLUENT 6.1, the leading computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software from Fluent. This allows results from FLUENT to be used for comprehensive computational aero-acoustics simulations within SYSNOISE Rev5.6, complementing FLUENT 6.1’s native aero-acoustics modeling capabilities.

Computational aero-acoustics is a critical technology for engineers in virtual prototyping environments who want to predict and compare the aero-acoustic performance of proposed designs. By using computational tools to identify and rank sources of flow-induced noise, engineers are able to design for noise reduction early in their design cycle, enabling them to produce better products while reducing the need for expensive physical testing, and shortening the overall time to market.

Application: CFD Helping Yacht Design for America’s Cup

Application The America's Cup, dating from 1851, is the oldest trophy in international sport and is considered to be yacht racing's Holy Grail. With such importance based on the design, CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) has become crucial in the production of a winning yacht.

In the year 2000, a German challenger started to work towards a future challenge called Pinta Racing. An international team of experts for hull form design, sailing aerodynamics, and further technical resources were brought together to support an outstanding crew of internationally renowned sailors to challenge the cup holder. The independent consulting company, Hamburg Ship Model Basin (HSVA) was asked to join the Pinta Racing’s expert team and perform the hydrodynamic assessment of the new ship hull. The main activities of HSVA comprised CFD computations and natural experimental tests in their large towing tank. The CFD analysis was based on potential flow results using the CFD code Comet from the CD adapco Group.
