New Software: Heatsink Optimization Software Released
Posted Tue June 17, 2003 @08:45AM
Print version Email story Tweet story
ANSYS FLUENT Fluent Inc., world leader in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software, and Qfinsoft Technology Inc. of Canada, announces the release of the latest version of the popular heat sink optimization software tool Qfin 3.0. This software is a part of the electronics cooling software suite from Fluent that includes Icepak 4.0 and Icepro 3.1. Qfin 3.0, an easy-to-use tool for designing optimized heat sinks, is sold exclusively by Fluent throughout the world. In the United States, Applied Thermal Technologies Inc., which is a sister company of Fluent, sells Qfin as a stand-alone product.

According to Dr. Jan Visser, President of Qfinsoft, Qfin has been developed as a heat sink design and optimization tool to cut the time and effort involved in designing optimized heat sinks. Along with a completely new design interface, a more advanced network solver that can solve multiple fans on the same heat sink, Qfins accuracy over a wide range of complex heat sink geometries has been improved.

AVL Used in Design of Ward's Ten Best Engines

AVL The engines on Ward's Auto World's 10 Best Engines may have come from America, Germany and Japan, but some of the brains behind the brawn have roots in Austria.

Ward's editors nominated 29 engines for Best Engines consideration. All were required to be available in regular production 2003 vehicles and all were judged against one another - there were no categories or other means of artificial competition.

Six of the seven automakers on this year's 10 Best list use AVL software in their engine development processes. The final verdict: the automakers that produced 9 out of the 10 best engines are aided by AVLs growing expertise and powerful suite of powertrain simulation software.

ANSYS CFX Continuing its longstanding relationship with HP, ANSYS Inc. (NASDAQ: ANSS), a global innovator of simulation software and technologies designed to optimize product development processes, today announced that CFX-5.6, the latest version of the companys best-in-class computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software, is now available on 64-bit Intel Itanium 2-based workstations running HP-UX 11i.

The move will give CFX customers access to more computing power, reducing the time required to optimize all aspects of fluid-flow analysis within their overall product design and manufacturing processes. CFX-5 is already the technology leader with its coupled multi-grid solver that simultaneously solves the full system of hydrodynamic equations. HPs Itanium-based workstations give engineers the power they need to tackle much more complicated problems than previously possible on 32-bit machines.

CD-adapco CD adapco Group and LMS International invite you to a free aeroacoustics workshop, where we will present methods and tools that show you how to predict flow noise and simulate its propagation.

Aeroacoustics Workshop
July 9th, 2003
Coventry, UK

In collaboration with our industrial partners (OEMs, suppliers and consultants), our methods of analysis have been developed specifically for engineers who need to understand aeroacoustic effects in order to optimize their product design.

CD adapco Group's CFD software, STAR-CD is used to simulate the flow fields and compile equivalent acoustic sources. The coupling of STAR-CD with LMS International's SYSNOISE software allows noise propagation to be calculated for the near and far field.

News Desktop Engineering Online has an article detailing the rise of CFD, historically associated only with analysts, in the design environment.
How do you design a racing yacht to take advantage of every puff of wind, even when another boat blocks the air current? How do you see inside an experimental fuel cell while its operating? How do you design ventilation fans to enable firefighter access and passenger exit in case of fire in a subway station? CFD. Thats how.

Researchers Use CFD to Examine Artificial Heart Valves
Posted Wed June 11, 2003 @08:06AM
Print version Email story Tweet story
News Numerical modeling techniques, developed at the Georgia Institute of Technology to simulate the flow of water around hydraulic structures such as bridge foundations, are being used to better understand the complex patterns of blood flow through artificial mechanical heart valves.

The research could yield the most accurate description to date of the turbulent flow environment blood cells and platelets are exposed to as they pass through an implanted mechanical heart valve information that researchers hope will lead to improvements in current mechanical valve testing and design procedures, and help reduce the potential for thromboembolic complications.

Backed by a four-year, $1.4 million grant from the National Institutes of Health, the research is being spearheaded by Ajit Yoganathan, Regents professor in the Wallace H. Coulter School of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech and Emory University and an internationally renowned expert on artificial heart valves and cardiovascular fluid mechanics research; and Fotis Sotiropoulos, an associate professor in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering and a leading expert in computational fluid mechanics.
