Grid Generation The 12th International Meshing Roundtable will be held in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA, on September 14-17, 2003.

In 1992, Sandia National Laboratories started the Meshing Roundtable as a small meeting of like-minded companies and organizations striving to establish a common focus for research and development in the field of mesh and grid generation. Sandia National Laboratories continues to organize the International Meshing Roundtable, which has become recognized as an international focal point annually attended by researchers and developers from dozens of countries around the world. The relaxed atmosphere at each Roundtable provides an open and technically rich environment in which to share new ideas and technical advances.

The International Meshing Roundtable continues to focus on bringing together researchers and developers from academia, national labs and industry in a stimulating, open environment to share technical information related to mesh generation and general pre-processing techniques. In 2003, Roundtable attendees will enjoy Santa Fe's unique Southwest architecture, picturesque streets, Loretto Chapel and miraculous staircase, distinctive regional foods, fine museums and art galleries. Santa Fe is filled with 400 years of history and culture. The conference hotel, Inn at Loretto, is within walking distance to the plaza, Palace of Governors and other attractions.

Research: Pointwise Heads Unstructured Meshing R&D Project

Grid Generation Pointwise, Inc. has been awarded a research and development contract worth an estimated $500,000 from the United States Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) for the development of an application programming interface (API) for unstructured meshing. Work on the 24 month research project, titled Geometry and Grid Modeling for Numerical Simulation (GGMNS), began in November 2002.

The goal of the GGMNS project is to develop an API to serve as a programming guideline for researchers developing new unstructured meshing techniques. AFRL and other agencies often fund such development with the hope that the new techniques will be incorporated into meshing applications for the benefit of the end user. However, without a standard API, the software implementation of meshing research often requires considerable rework for integration into existing software. The rework is often sufficiently large that integration is never attempted or completed, and the end-user never benefits from the results of the research. A standard API would also benefit meshing researchers by allowing them to use existing meshing applications as frameworks for their research, rather than spending resources developing their own application frameworks.

News Blue Ridge Numerics will begin a 19 city seminar tour this week for product development engineers and engineering managers.

This educational and interactive seminar provides an up-close look at how a new generation of engineers is using CFdesign as an extension of their 3D MCAD system to optimize fluid flow and heat transfer performance.

Companies using CFdesign report that on average they are able to reduce the time it takes to develop an optimized product design by 70% while cutting department-level costs by 65%.

Business: IIS Opens Domestic CFD Application Shop

News The Indian Institute of Science’s department of mechanical engineering has opened a design shop in Bangalore aiming for the domestic market in the emerging computational fluid dynamics (CFD) space.

So far most Indian companies working in this high-end area have been catering to in-house requirements and the Advanced Product Design and Prototyping outfit (APDAP) will be among the few players to offer this as a service from India They will mainly focus on the defence and Indian enterprise sector.

The product design services offered by APDAP will take a project right from the concept stage to industrial/product design, cost factoring, testing/validation, FEA (finite element analysis) to validate the design, virtual simulation and finally the rapid prototyping technique stage when a working model of the product will be made available besides also tying up on the manufacturing front.

Application: Building Interiors Go With The Flow

Application A recent article in the Architectural Record features CFD analysis of a building interior:

When future visitors stroll through the Clinton Presidential Center in Little Rock, Arkansas, they’ll have little idea how much of their physical comfort depends on what’s underfoot. A special floor slab will house an exotic heating and cooling system that will variously circulate hot or cold water throughout the museum to regulate the indoor temperature according to the seasons.
But the floor won’t be the only environmental regulator. Streaming sunlight from an all-glass, west-facing wall will enter the space to help heat the interior and create buoyant layers of air and comfortable surroundings for guests.
This intricate dance of temperatures and air currents hasn’t been left to chance. Engineers are spending months pouring over sophisticated computer models that forecast the temperatures at every point within the building for each season of the year, and for specific times of each day. The environmental model has became an essential component of the design process.
