Application: Endangered Fish Benefit from CFD

Application Environmental applications of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) have become more common in recent years with the increased availability and ease of use of commercial grid generation software and CFD solvers. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory has been supporting studies by the US Army Corps of Engineers, Portland District by creating and applying Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) CFD models to the Columbia River and portions of the dam structures at several hydroelectric projects, including the tailrace of The Dalles Dam.

Numerical models in The Dalles tailrace are being used to support efforts to reduce fish mortality associated with fish passaging of the hydroelectric project. At The Dalles, several locations have been proposed for a high flow outfall that would move fish around the dam rather than through the turbines or over the spillway.

One of the oldest and finest establishments of its kind in India, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has grown into a premier center of research and advanced instruction. Its Combustion Gasification and Propulsion Laboratory works mostly on fundamental research in combustion and its applications in industry.

A recent research project focused on investigating the effects of flow recirculation on the efficiency of a gas furnace, the goal being to optimize the position of the fuel nozzles. CFD simulations were conducted in parallel with experimental work on a typical preheated-air furnace.

New Software: CFX-BladeGen 4.1 Released

Geometry CFX has released version 4.1 of itís market-leading turbo-machinery software, CFX-BladeGen. The new version incorporates many new or enhanced features to provide designers with the complete system for 3-Dimensional (3D) blade design and automatic performance evaluation. The new features include a parametric study tool which automates batch studies of a range of conditions, and meridional functions to define trim profiles and control curves.

The user interface has also been significantly enhanced to further improve useability.

Add the rapid performance-screening "Plus" module, CFX-BladeGenPlus, and harness the power to readily obtain 3D viscous solutions with a level of effort equivalent to streamline curvature approaches.

New Software: Visualization Provides A Deeper Understanding of Complex Data

Post Processing Virtual Vantage visualization software from Fuel-Tech N.V. uses virtual reality technology to help provide a much deeper and faster understanding of complex data sets, such as computational fluid dynamics (CFD) results, than can be obtained with conventional post-processing tools. It is difficult and time-consuming to identify areas that are critical to solving the problem or optimizing the design when viewing CFD results in the conventional manner, as contour plots overlaid on cross-sections of the solution domain. Virtual Vantage, on the other hand, allows users to maneuver through the solution domain from a first-person perspective in three-dimensional space while viewing critical dependent variables as color contours.

CFD has become an important design tool in nearly every industrial field because it provides values for fluid velocity, fluid temperature, fluid pressure and species concentrations throughout a flow domain. But CFD analysis to date has been limited by post-processors that provide results relative to a fixed user position that discourage discovery. Virtual Vantage software harnesses the power of virtual reality to convert the flow domain into a computer-generated world that the user can immerse himself or herself within in order to bring their fullest potential of human thought and skill to bear on the problem.

Application: Coupled 1D-3D Analysis Improves Engine Design

Application BMW Motoren GmbH designs and manufactures automotive engines for use in passenger cars. The factory at Steyr, Austria manufactures over 60% of all BMW's engines.

Engine cooling simulation has been done for several years with 1D tools being used to determine pressure losses and flow rates in cooling circuits. The more complex flow patterns in cylinder head and jacket are simulated with full 3D CFD to determine convective heat transfer coefficients.

BMW simulates the vehicle's coolant flow with FLOWMASTER2, which enables a one-dimensional description of the whole system. Flow in the engine coolant jacket, which is much less predictable, is described three-dimensionally by the CFD programme STAR-CD, from CD-adapco.

New Software: Tecplot Releases CFD Analyzer 3.0

Post Processing Tecplot has released CFD Analyzer 3.0 which increases analysis capabilities with feature extraction and particle mass options.

Highlights include:

  • Improvements to the integration routines
  • A mass option for particle path calculations
  • Flow feature extraction
  • New CFD functions
  • Shadowgraphs and Schlieren plots

The new Feature Extraction dialog adds the capabilities of MIT's FX (Fluid Feature eXtraction) library. The FX library calculates and displays any of several features of 3-D flow solutions. It takes grid and boundary information, plus velocity and several scalar flow solution variables as input. It calculates a shock function to generate shock surfaces (iso-surfaces where the shock function equals unity), vortex cores, and separation/attachment lines.
