CFdesign Certified for Autodesk Inventor

News Blue Ridge Numerics has announced that CFdesign has completed the Autodesk Inventor certification process and is now an Autodesk Inventor Certified Application.

The new Autodesk Inventor Certified Application Program certifies products that have met standards set by Autodesk to ensure quality, robustness and the highest level of interoperability with Autodesk Inventor 3D mechanical design software.

CFdesign makes it possible for 3D product designs built in Autodesk Inventor software to be evaluated and optimized without any type of translation or conversion process. Changes made to geometry within Autodesk Inventor are automatically reflected in CFdesign, eliminating the time-consuming and confusing process of creating and managing multiple geometry models during a project lifecycle.

In other news, the company announced the opening of new US sales offices in St. Louis and Denver that will service the Midwest and Southwest and Rocky Mountain regions respectively.

Grid Generation You are invited to attend the

6th Symposium on Overset Composite Grids & Solution Technology.

The bi-annual symposium will be held October 8-10, 2002, at the Ramada Plaza Beach Resort, Ft. Walton Beach, Florida USA. This international symposium provides an open communication forum for mathematicians, scientists, and engineers from academia, industry, and government. The symposium organization is quite informal, and the primary purpose is to present and discuss new, current, and work in progress of the participants. The specific goals of the symposium are the following:

  1. Communicate current work, new research ideas, and work in progress
  2. Exchange ideas involving overset grid methodologies
  3. Develop interactions between interested researchers
  4. Provide an opportunity for interaction between researchers, developers, and users.

Navier-Stokes Solution Worth 1 Million Dollars

News The Clay Mathematics Institute of Cambridge, Massachusetts (CMI) has named seven “Millennium Prize Problems.” The Scientific Advisory Board of CMI selected these problems, focusing on important classic questions that have resisted solution over the years. The Board of Directors of CMI have designated a $7 million prize fund for the solution to these problems, with $1 million allocated to each.

Among the seven problems is a call for the solution to the Navier-Stokes Equations. The challenge is to make substantial progress toward a mathematical theory which will unlock the secrets hidden in the Navier-Stokes equations.

In order to be awarded the prize, the solution must prove one of the four following statements:

  1. Existence and smoothness of Navier–Stokes solutions on R3
  2. Existence and smoothness of Navier–Stokes solutions in R3/Z3
  3. Breakdown of Navier–Stokes solutions on R3
  4. Breakdown of Navier–Stokes Solutions on R3/Z3

Since we don ’t even know whether these solutions exist our understanding is at a very primitive level. Standard methods from PDE appear inadequate to settle the problem. Instead we probably need some deep new ideas.

Features: CFD Speeds US Navy Aircraft Modifications

Application Warren H. Davis, Ph.D., Aero CFD Principal Engineer for Northrop Grumman, leads a team responding to continual updates, additions, and enhancements to the U.S. Navy electronics surveillance workhorse, the E-2C Hawkeye. The Hawkeye provided stellar success in Afghanistan missions earlier this year.

Dr. Davis is one of the people who answers the “will it fly right” question when confronted with next generation modifications. He helps assure that any modifications to aero/propulsion capabilities, airframe additions including antennas, and other changes maintain and enhance performance.

Dr. Davis and his team gauge adaptations on the computer, using two remarkable programs (among other tools): Gridgen and Overflow. Gridgen is Pointwise Inc.’s grid generation and pre-processing CFD enabling bridge connecting computer aided design (CAD) software and CFD solvers such as Overflow, Fluent, STAR-CD, and CFX. The program generates hexahedral, tetrahedral, and hybrid (prisms and pyramids) meshes, reads geometry from CAD systems, and includes meshing tools and direct solver interfaces. Overflow is a Navier-Stokes flow solver that uses single block grids or Chimera overset (structured) grid systems. Chimera overset grids are body-fitted hexahedral grids around each component. They can overlap each other instead of requiring exact point-to-point interface matching like traditional structured grids. This makes the engineer’s grid generation task faster and easier while maintaining accuracy.

News Engineous Software, provider of the design optimization software iSIGHT, announced today the launch of their FIPER Vendor Participant Program.

Engineous is in discussions with over 30 major vendors in the fields of CAE, structural analysis, CFD and CAD software, specialized design tools, hardware platforms, infrastructure software and solutions providers. The program kick-off is marked by the signing of seven partners: Rand Worldwide, Infosys, Platform Computing Corporation, Engineering Intent, TranscenData ITI, Romax Technology, and Cranfield University. In addition, Georgia Tech ASDL has pledged its intent to join. More announcements are expected over the next few weeks.

The CD adapco Group offers all European users the opportunity of understanding of how to set-up and effectively run three dimensional STAR-CD analyses coupled to a one dimensional engine simulation code, GT-POWER.

The course is aimed at giving the STAR-CD user an understanding of how to set-up and effectively run three dimensional STAR-CD analyses coupled to a one dimensional engine simulation code. The course will use GT-POWER as the engine simulation code. For some components, a more stable and realistic STAR-CD analysis is obtained by allowing the unsteady STAR-CD analysis results to interact with (influence) the domain boundary conditions. In addition to instruction, the course will provide the STAR-CD user with hands-on experience through use of a worked example. The course also offers the user the opportunity to interact with an experienced engineer who has run several coupled analyses.
