NASA Codes Used on Boeing Sonic Cruiser

News According to this NASA Tech Brief, Boeing has incorporated an array of NASA-developed software to analyze designs of its new Sonic Cruiser commercial jet. NASA Overset CFD Software, Chimera Grid Tools, and Pegasus 5 software all are being used to perform computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of the aircraft design, reducing the amount of wind tunnel testing that will be needed.

NASA Overset CFD Software has been used by Boeing over the past year to run hundreds of CFD calculations. Chimera Grid Tools contains a variety of tools for the Chimera overset grid approach for solving CFD problems. It also contains a program known as OVERGRID, which serves as a graphical user interface to most of the package tools. PEGASUS 5 is a series of mesh interpolation codes for flow analysis problems.

Boeing's Sonic Cruiser is a long-range (6,000 to 9,000 nautical miles) commercial jet that will carry between 200 and 250 passengers, and fly at the mid-40,000-foot level or higher at speeds between Mach 0.95 and Mach 0.98. It will have lower nitrogen oxide emissions than today's commercial airliners, and will be quieter than upcoming noise standards and current airport requirements.

Pro/E: Workstation Benchmark 2002

Hardware Pro/E Magazine has published the results of their 2002 Workstation benchmark. Each year Pro/E challenges hardware vendors to supply the best workstation for running Pro/ENGINEER. The goal is to help the Pro/ENGINEER user and the corporate IT decision-maker make informed, knowledgeable decisions about purchasing hardware for use with Pro/ENGINEER.

The Benchmark rates CPU performance, graphics performance, price, and benchmark time to determine an overall winner. The results [pdf] of the benchmark should be valid for any engineering compute-intensive task.

These Awards are presented to the suppliers of the top automotive products and technologies showcased at the SAE 2002 World Congress as voted for by the 40,000 visitors to the show. SAE 2002 is a showcase for the products, services, and technologies available to the global automotive community. The newly released FLUENT 6, which is built on Fluent Inc.'s core unstructured CFD technology platform, expands Fluent's industry standard for CFD automotive applications to include deicing and water runoff, fuel tank studies, HVAC systems and components, painting, and flow-induced noise. Major enhancements in turbomachinery modeling and underhood thermal analysis also provide economical design testing options for automotive engineers. A moving/deforming mesh capability, released in beta form with this version, is one of many building blocks in the release intended to tackle challenging IC engine modeling.

News Blue Ridge Numerics has announced the opening of two new regional sales and support offices located in Detroit, MI, and Singapore. The Detroit office will service Michigan and Ohio in the U.S. and the province of Ontario in Canada. The Singapore office will service the Pacific Rim and South Asian markets.

New Software: Unified Process Management System for CFD codes

The Unified Process Management System (UPMS) is a valuable CFD tool that utilizes NASA’s CFD codes: PAB3D, CFL3D and TLNS3D.

Each of these CFD codes has a specific format for input files. So far, the choice of a particular CFD code depends upon its reliability, its ease of use and the availability of technical support. However, it is difficult to find a CFD code that combines all of these requirements. Simple modifications in problem definition often require extensive alterations to these formats. Often, users must be trained by CFD code suppliers to enable them to model the problem correctly, and to use the available options in the code efficiently. Familiarization with more than one code becomes difficult.

The UPMS alleviates these difficulties with the use of an expert Graphical User Interface (GUI) system. The system also includes interactive adaptive grid capabilities and grid modification processes. The significance of this work is its flexibility in allowing these CFD grid structured codes to be coupled with the UPMS without any modifications whatsoever to the CFD solvers. It automatically generates documentation of code-independent project/ problem setup in engineering terms.
