Application: CFD Vital for McLaren F1 team

Application CFD is playing an ever more vital role for the McLaren Formula 1 team. Their biggest CFD model involves the simulation of the airflow over every external aerodynamic surface of the whole car, including the wing mirrors.

The McLaren team utilizes two Sun Technical Compute Farm (Sun TCF) systems for their number-crunching power. With the Sun TCF systems, this can now be completed in just three days, a huge competitive advantage when compared to the several weeks that the analysis required in the past.

The practical advantage of this extra capability was dramatically illustrated last season when the all important front wing was completely re-designed, tested, manufactured and fitted to the car during a two-week interlude between Grand Prix races.

F1 is all about speed, not just speed on the track but also, increasingly, speed of development off the track,

Hardware SGI has announced an agressive migration assistance program for HP users frightened by the HP-Compaq merger.

"The reduced focus on midrange technical computing, evidenced by the proposed HP and Compaq merger and the reported phasing out of the PA-RISC and ALPHA microprocessor lines, has resulted in customers being concerned about the stability of their development environments. SGI is responding to the needs of those users with an easy Migration Assistance Program created to satisfy customers' requirements for a long-term and stable technical computing solution," said Jan Silverman, senior vice president of marketing at SGI.

Are you worried about your technical computing hardware from HP/Compaq?

News Blue Ridge Numerics has announced that CFdesign for Autodesk Inventor will be introduced at this year’s National Design & Engineering show in Chicago, March 18-21.

Visitors to the National Design & Engineering show can see a demonstration of CFdesign and Inventor at the Autodesk Partner Pavilion (booth #6501).

This product marks an interesting turning point within commercial CFD -- integration with a so-called "low end" CAD system. Products such as this help push CFD down the engineering pyramid to the designer level.
