CFD for Automobile Aerodynamics

News Automotive Design & Production has an article about the use of Exa's CFD code in the automotive industry.

Exa has won the support of a number of automotive manufacturers by modeling not only their test vehicles, but the entire wind tunnel as well. This provided the automotive engineers with a true comparison between the test and analysis results. The CFD results correlated very well.

Now that CFD analysis is viewed as a valuable analysis tool, Exa is promoting analysis early in the design process.

“It’s a real ‘What if?’ tool,” says Stephen Remondi, president, CEO, and co-founder of Exa Corp. “Since you can change your model quickly, cost effectively and have confidence in the simulation, you’re able to try out more aggressive, more creative ideas in the time available.” While it’s presently in the domain of engineers and aerodynamicists, they’re working on a digital interface for designers so that 3D models will be, in effect, “sculpted” as if they were in clay.
Applications include vehicle aerodynamics, underhood thermal management, HVAC, powertrains, air filters, exhaust systems, disc brakes, intake and exhaust manifolds, valves and aeroacoustics.

Fluent Releases GAMBIT 2.0

ANSYS FLUENT Fluent has announced the release of the latest version of their general purpose pre-processor for CFD. GAMBIT 2.0 features an updated geometry kernel which allows for direct access to Pro/ENGINEER's geometry engine and support for ACIS 6.3.

Also new to this release is GAMBIT's ability to automatically refine the mesh in areas of strong curvature and near small gaps. An example of this technology was displayed in the IMR Meshing Maestro award-winning mesh.

A new version of G/Turbo has also been released with GAMBIT 2.0. G/Turbo is an application specific pre-processor integrated into the GAMBIT interface. G/Turbo is a tool which enables the rapid generation of meshes for turbomachinery applications. A unique feature of the pre-processor is the ability to create both structured and unstructured meshes. This allows simple geometries to be created very quickly while also providing a path for analysis of more complex models. G/Turbo is supplied as an add-on to GAMBIT 2.0.

adapco and TTF Sign Partnership Agreement

CD-adapco adapco and TTF have announced the signing of a worldwide partnership agreement which will enable STAR-CD to read native CAD formats.

Trade and Technologies France SA (TTF) develops and markets solutions for CAD model interoperability. adapco will integrate TTF CAD libraries into their software for reading the native formats of the major CAD systems independently of the CAD license.

"We are looking forward to working with TTF towards our goal of bringing our CFD tools more truly into the CAE design engineering environment than has ever been achieved in the fluid flow simulation market", said Steve MacDonald ,chief executive of the CD adapco Group.
There is no word as of yet which CAD formats will be supported, however, TTF claims library support for CATIA, PRO-ENGINEER, UNIGRAPHICS, CADDS, and EUCLID.

ATI Ships FIRE GL 8800 Graphics Board

Hardware ATI Technologies has announced that it is shipping their newest mid-range 3D workstation graphics board. The FIRE GL 8800 is geared towards CAD/CAM and modeling. The initial allotments will all go to Hewlett-Packard for inclusion in their new technical workstations.

The card features 128MB of DDR memory, industry-leading optimized Workstation OpenGL performance, DVD video playback as well as support for 3D resolutions (32-bit color) up to 2048 X 1536 pixels, digital flat panel and various configurations of multiple displays.

CFX Launches New Maritime Competence Centre

ANSYS CFX CFX-Germany has teamed with Schiffbau-Versuchanstalt Potsdam GmbH (SVA) to form a "Maritime CFX Competence Centre". Building on a well-established relationship, the partnership is focused on improving understanding of the unsteady flow past a the propeller as it rotates behind the ship.

Previous simulations of the propeller-ship configuration have shown that a true time-dependent rotor-stator interface provides a significantly higher level of accuracy than steady-state simulations using a sliding mixing plane. The unsteady approach also provides pressure fluctation data on the hull and rudder which are a main source for noise and vibration within the ship.

The new work allows ship hulls to be optimized based on not only their drag, but also on the interaction of the propeller and hull. This will allow for designs which can achieve a desired speed at a lower power requirement.

"The collaboration between SVA and CFX has resulted in many significant improvements of the CFX software, which makes CFX the preferred choice in marine applications. We are committed to ensuring our software meets the demands of our maritime customers," endorses Florian Menter, Head of Development at CFX-Germany.
