Application: Using CFD to Optimize APU Design
Posted Tue November 06, 2001 @03:32PM

Application Hamilton Sundstrand Power Systems has used CFD to optimize the design of an auxiliary power unit (APU) for the new Embraer ERJ 170 regional jet.

An APU is a gas turbine used to provide electrical and pneumatic power during ground operations. The unit also acts as a backup supply of electrical power when airborne. The design of the APU for the Embraer jet was more complicated than usual.

"It was a particularly challenging component to design because there were constraints regarding size, drag, and acoustics," says Jose Goldstein, senior engineer at Hamilton Sundstrand Power Systems.

A winglet is a wing-like surface attached to the tip of the wing that is used to improve fuel efficiency and climbing capability. It accomplishes this by acting like a small sail with a lift component that generates a traction force, draining energy from the tip vortices. Consequently, it reduces the vortex strength, lowering induced drag.

Help Desk tbg_guj writes: "I am a student of VJTI, Mumbai University. As part of my ME curriculum, I am doing my project in CFD using CFDRC software. While modeling a 3D geometry, I have encounterd the problem of grid orthogonality. The problem is a 3D model of the flow over a car body. If I divide the flow channel into multiple domains, I have an interface problem in the solver. Please help.

If anyone has a case study similar to my problem, please mail me."

News The CD adapco Group invites you to a seminar on the use of the FRONTIER multidisciplinary design optimization tool.

FRONTIER is a design optimisation tool, which can be interfaced with STAR-CD and is dedicated to helping our users achieve REDUCED TIME TO MARKET. It achieves this by using genetic algorithm methods to relate "cause and effect" - where "causes" are the set of parameters that define a product or process, and "effects" are the business benefits that result from an optimised design.

The seminar will be held at the Holiday Inn in Hammersmith, London from 9.30 -12.30, November 21st, 2001.

Fluent Offers CDROM Based CFD Training
Posted Wed October 31, 2001 @12:14PM
Print version Email story Tweet story
News Fluent has developed an interactive CDROM based training course in advanced CFD modeling.

Each CDROM contains interactive video lectures and downloadable tutorials that cover the following topics:

  • Combustion modeling
  • Multiphase modeling
  • Turbulence modeling
The material on each CDROM is delivered by one of Fluent's senior CFD trainers.

Pricing and Availability

The Combustion modeling, multiphase modeling, and turbulence modeling CDROMs are $250 each or $600 for the set of three. The training materials can be ordered from the Fluent web site at

I've had the opportunity to preview these training CDROMs and the multimedia presentation is excellent. The material is covered from first principles in a detailed manner. Even seasoned CFD veterans will benefit from the material on these CDROMs.
