Solving the Mystery of the Extra Shock Wave
Posted Mon August 13, 2001 @06:44PM

Application In the second of their Mysteries of Engineering Fluid Dynamics series, AEA Technology examines the reason behind an "extra" shock wave found on flow past a sharp wedge.

The case [pdf] examines supersonic flow past a 10 degree wedge and the creation of an oblique shock off the bottom surface which is parallel to the flow. It is an interesting application which explores the complex nature of a seemingly simple flowfield.

News In another step towards paving the way for mainstream CFD usage, FloWorks (a CFD plug-in for SolidWorks) has been certified as a Gold Product. The certification process involves three primary characteristics: single window integration, full associativity, and the ability to pass a rigorous testing and certification conducted by SolidWorks.

Is this a sign of the future for CFD?

Volkswagen Engineers Use CFD for Thermal Management
Posted Tue August 07, 2001 @03:58PM
Print version Email story Tweet story
Application In order to optimize underhood thermal management systems (radiator, fan, etc) engineers at Volkswagen are using CFD to examine the airflow and temperature distribution in the engine compartment. CFD is used to simulate a number of "what if" scenarios such as, a vehicle under load or failure of a fan.

Volkswagen engineers have found that, in order to accurately simulate the engine compartment, the analysis should include:

  • representation of the heat exchanger packages
  • the effects of fans
  • reasonable inlet and wall boundary conditions (turbulence, etc.)
  • thermal radiation effects
  • conjugate heat transfer
