CD adapco Group Giving Vehicle Thermal Management Course

CD-adapco The CD adapco Group is holding a Vehicle Thermal Management Training Course for advanced users. The course will include:
  • Advanced simulation of automotive heat exchangers, including radiators, heaters, charge air coolers, condensers, evaporators and others.
  • Analysis of engine compartment flow and heat transfer, including fan modeling, thermal radiation and boundary conditions.
  • Analysis of passenger compartment flow and heat transfer, including transient analyses, solar radiation, and initial and boundary conditions.
  • Analysis of automotive windshield de-icing and defogging.
The course is to be held September 24-26, 2001 at the Computational Dynamics offices in London, UK.

Application: CFD for Chemical Mixing

Application Chemical Online has posted a couple of articles which relate the use of CFD in the chemical process industry. Specifically, CFD is applied to optimize mixing in a batch reactor (a large tank used for mixing chemicals - much like a kitchen blender).

The first article uses CFD to match tank, impeller, and baffle geometry as well as additive feed location. The simulations were performed to determine the mixing time which is critical to mixing efficiency. The case is particularly interesting due to the use of three different impeller models. One, a simple velocity data method, does not explicitly model the impeller, but enforces known velocity and turbulence values (taken from experiment) in the impeller region. The other methods model the impeller explicitly, but differ in their treatment of the frame of reference change. One uses the true transient sliding-mesh interface and the other employs averaging at the interface. In addition, the accuracy of k-e and RSM turbulence models for this geometry was examined. Accuracy is quoted to be within experimental error.

Korea Buys Big Iron

News The Korea Institute of Science Technology and Information has purchased one of the 10 largest supercomputers in the world from IBM to use in its science and high performance computing research.

The machine will be used for natural and applied sciences such as life science, physics, chemistry and fluid mechanics (read CFD). The machine will use IBM's new Power4 technology.

Solver Khaled S. Abdol-Hamid writes "PAB3D solves the three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with a finite-volume formulation on structured multi-block grids. The PAB3D code was developed at NASA Langley Research Center under NASA Contract NAS1-19831 and the United States Government retains certain rights. Application: CFD Solves Shower Curtain Mystery

Application Engineer David Schmidt employed Fluent to determine why the shower curtain frustratingly sucks in during your shower.

By modifying Fluent to model sprays, Schmidt was able to model the standard shower configuration and determine that the water spray sets up a recirculating flow pattern which lowers the pressure on the inside of the curtain.

Gas Flow Simulation at the Molecular Level

News The Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method is used to simulate rarified gas flows where the continuum Navier-Stokes equations become invalid. The DSMC method works by tracking the interaction of serveral particles, each of which represent a large number of real molecules.

GAB Consulting distributes a free Windows PC program for experimenting (in real time) with DSMC.
