Application: CFD Solves Shower Curtain Mystery

Application Engineer David Schmidt employed Fluent to determine why the shower curtain frustratingly sucks in during your shower.

By modifying Fluent to model sprays, Schmidt was able to model the standard shower configuration and determine that the water spray sets up a recirculating flow pattern which lowers the pressure on the inside of the curtain.

Gas Flow Simulation at the Molecular Level

News The Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method is used to simulate rarified gas flows where the continuum Navier-Stokes equations become invalid. The DSMC method works by tracking the interaction of serveral particles, each of which represent a large number of real molecules.

GAB Consulting distributes a free Windows PC program for experimenting (in real time) with DSMC.

Application: Combustion Research Using CFD

Application This NCSA article describes work being done at the State University of New York at Buffalo on combustion research. Aerospace engineer Cyrus Madnia is using Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) to accurately predict the vortex structures within flames.

The article details the various turbulent structures used to stabilize flames and how they affect burning efficiency. The work is being done on a 16 cpu SGI Origin2000.

CFD as a CAD Plug-in Anyone?

News German software developer NIKA has released [pdf] FloWorks 2001, a fluid analysis program for design engineers which works within SolidWorks.

The site claims that the software belongs to a new class of simulation software called Engineering Fluid Dynamics (EFD). Boasting complete CAD integration and engineering goal-oriented operation, the software requires less than 1 day of training to use.

Application: CFD Improves Inkjet Printing

Application ME Magazine is running an article on Kodak's use of CFD in the development of a MEMS (microelectromechanical system) inkjet printhead.

Current inkjet technology (piezoelectric channel or thermal bubble) limits the overall size of the inkjet array. This makes the technology acceptable for home use, but insufficient for high production office use. Kodak hopes to use MEMS technology to produce a new method of creating inkjet drops which will scale to large arrays.

"The MEMS structures we are developing will control the motion of ink by exploiting its surface properties," Delametter explained. "Heating a fluid meniscus non-uniformly induces a gradient in surface tension. This produces a tangential force, called a Marangoni force, on the liquid free surface. Whenever fluid dimensions are less than 10 microns, thermocapillary-driven forces can separate discrete droplets from the main fluid body and also propel them rapidly through space."

Application: Benetton Formula 1 Using CFD to Design Cars

Application Benetton Formula 1 has begun using CFD for whole-car analysis of their race vehicle. As one of the few teams using CFD for the whole car, Benetton is stepping away from the status quo of using panel method codes for whole-car aerodynamic analysis.

There is a short story about the effort on the CD adapco Group site. They are actually only analyzing half the car, understandable as the grid is still 10 million cells.
