Airpak 2.0 Released

ANSYS FLUENT Fluent has released a major new version of their airflow modeling software Airpak.

Designed for HVAC, Health & Safety, and Environmental engineers, the latest version of Airpak has several enhancements including better CAD integration, a macro function for building simple models of diffusors, a detailed solar loading model, an animation capability, and several speed enhancements.

"The demand for airflow modeling to be done upfront in the design process for ventilation systems is heating up," says Airpak Product Manager Walter Schwarz, "and more and more firms are selecting Airpak as their tool of choice. The features that we've added with this new release are our response to the continuous market demands for faster model building, faster solutions, and easier ways to produce effective pictures, plots and animations from simulation results."

CFD and Sinking Tea Leaves - A Mystery Solved

Application Fluent previously used CFD in it's investigations into confounding bubble movement in beer, now AEA Technology has used CFD to determine why heavy tea particles collect at the center and not the perimeter of a cup of stirred water.

Both are fun and informative articles.

Application: Optimizing Waste Incinerators and Gas Scrubbers with CFD

Application By utilizing extensive customizations in the STAR-CD user source routines, NOELL KRC-ENERGIE-UND-UMWELTTECHNIK, were able to simulate an entire waste incinerator and a single loop flue gas scrubber.

Waste incinerators have become an attractive alternative to landfill sites. By burning the waste, municipalities get the double benefit of waste volume reduction and generation of electrical power. NOELL used CFD to optimize flow patterns for mixing and cooling purposes.

To ensure reliable functioning and availability of the plant, it is essential to avoid hot regions near the wall that might damage the refractory material. It is also necessary to ensure good mixing and a complete as possible burn up, which is achieved by optimising the geometry, air supply configuration and operational conditions.
"Comparisons with measured data and observations in existing plants are very encouraging, confirming that STAR-CD is capable of providing realistic simulations and valuable insight into the operations of these incinerators."

Flue gas scrubbers are used to capture harmful substances from coal and waste fired power plants. Two phase Lagrangian tracking of spray droplets, with interphase heat and mass transfer, was utilized to model a parallel-flow single-loop HCl scrubber.

For accurate modelling, the absorption of harmful substances into the evaporating drops must also be handled, requiring inclusion of inter-phase heat and mass transfer in the simulation. A model describing the separation was implemented in STAR-CD via user subroutines, and a droplet-wall model was introduced to describe the behaviour of droplets splashing into wall films.

EnSight Version 7.3 Available

Post Processing CEI have released the latest version of their EnSight and EnSight Gold post processors. Version 7.3 features animation transparency, flow-feature extraction, and a data reader for CGNS. New features in the advanced Gold version include decomposed datasets, parallel rendering, and partial display during model transformation.
"The new features and greater functionality in EnSight and EnSight Gold 7.3 reflect our customer's needs and the results of our ongoing research work for national labs in the U.S., Europe and Japan," says Kent Misegades, CEI president. "Our developers are continuing to work on improvements ranging from our powerful, integrated plotter, to numerous visualization features requested by our users. This includes integrating new data readers, researching visualization on Linux clusters, and expanding rendering capabilities for virtual reality environments such as powerwalls, benches and caves."

FIELDVIEW 7.1 Now Available

Post Processing Intelligent Light has made version 7.1 of their post-processor FIELDVIEW available. Highlights include a Red Hat Linux version, support for CGNS, and enhanced parallel capabilities.
You Should Get This Release:
  • If you are using Parallel FIELDVIEW or Client-server mode, the enhancements will greatly benefit you. And, FV7.1 adds new clients for HP and SUN to the FIELDVIEW 7 offering of SGI-64 and Windows;
  • If you need to run FIELDVIEW on Intel hardware with the Red Hat LINUX O/S;
  • If you are using STAR-CD, FLUENT, CFX-5, SCRYU (in Japan) or any solver that uses FV-UNS files as output, you need this release because of a bug fix in handling face-based results;
  • If you are using unstructured grids and need a way to review grid/cell topology, Crinkle Surfaces in FV7.1 will be of great benefit;
  • If you need to use CGNS files with FIELDVIEW.
