Application: CFD Analysis Helps Combat Congenital Heart Disease in Children

Congenital heart defects account for five times more deaths annually than all childhood cancers combined. Alison Marsden, an assistant mechanical and aerospace engineering professor at the University of California at San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering, has developed a unique set of computer modeling tools that are expected to enhance pediatric surgeons’ ability to perform heart surgery on children. Marsden’s work focuses on designing and using simulation tools to provide a way of testing new surgery designs on the computer before trying them on patients, much like, for example, engineers use computer codes to test new designs for airplanes or automobiles.

Application: Harpoon Helps Save Lives

Application For the last eighteen months researchers at the Institute for Computational Mechanics in Munich, Germany, have been trying to determine the risk of abdominal aorta rupture to individual patients.

Abdominal aortic aneurysms are the tenth biggest killer in the western world, with over 80% of those who suffer a ruptured aneurysm dying before they reach a hospital. Even if the patient does receive treatment, the mortality rate remains very high.

CD-adapco CD-adapco, the leading provider of Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) and CAE software and services, today announced the launch of their Vehicle Simulation Resource Center.
