F1 Restrictions to Include Limits on CFD

News Formula One racing’s governing body, the FIA, has published a series of measures that they intend to introduce which have been designed to reduce costs within the sport. The plans, agreed by the World Motor Sport Council in Monaco on Friday, include a variety of aerodynamic testing restrictions for next year.

One of the new measures will limit teams to using just one wind tunnel, with squads only permitted to carry out 15 runs over each eight-hour day. Weekend wind tunnel testing will also be banned and the FIA also plans to introduce limitations to prevent teams from diverting wind-tunnel resources into Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).

Application: Streamlined Turbomachinery Blade Flutter Analysis

The “flutter” of blades within compressors and turbines is a serious cause of machine failure that is difficult to predict and expensive to correct. This aeromechanical phenomenon usually occurs at a blade natural frequency and involves sustained blade vibration resulting from the changing pressure field around the blade as it oscillates. For the process to occur, it is necessary that, over one cycle, there is an input of energy from the gas stream to the blade of a sufficient magnitude to overcome the mechanical damping.

Clearly, flutter is dependent on both the aerodynamic and structural characteristics of the blade, and, until recently, it has been beyond the design capability to satisfactorily investigate and avoid this phenomenon. Historically, empirical design criteria have been used based on parameters involving blade natural frequencies and flow transit times, but these methods fail to take into account generally found vibrational modes or the influence of adjacent blades.

Visualization: CEI awarded SBIR Phase I for Unsteady Visualization

News Computational Engineering International Inc. (CEI) was recently awarded a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program Phase I Award from the United States Army.

The purpose of the project is to research and determine the technical merit or feasibility of CFD Co-processing for Unsteady Visualization. Co-processing remains a seldom-used method to post-process simulations both because of gains in computing speed and storage capacity, and the lack of reliable, robust automated flow feature extraction methods.

News SoftinWay Inc, an innovator in advanced turbomachinery design software and the creator of AxSTREAM™ Design and Optimization suite of programs, has announced a special bundle for its Turbomachinery Flow Path Design and Optimization Educational Program for use in college and university computer labs.

New Software: CD-adapco Releases STAR-CD V4.04

CD-adapco CD-adapco announces the release of STAR-CD V4.04, marking the third major product release in a period of just two weeks: STAR-CD V4.04 joins the recently released STAR-CCM+ V2.10 and STAR-CAD Series V4.14.

According to VP of Product Management, Jean-Claude Ercolanelli, the release of new versions of all three major products is testament to CD-adapco’s Power of Integration:
