Research: Fluid Dynamics Works on Nanoscale in Real World

News In 2000, Georgia Tech researchers showed that fluid dynamics theory could be modified to work on the nanoscale, albeit in a vacuum. Now, seven years later they've shown that it can be modified to work in the real world, too – that is, outside of a vacuum. The results appear in the February 9 issue of Physical Review Letters (PRL).

Understanding the motion of fluids is the basis for a tremendous amount of engineering and technology in contemporary life. Planes fly and ships sail because scientists understand the rules of how fluids like water and air behave under varying conditions.

New Software: Harpoon Version 2.5 Released

News Sharc’s Extreme Mesher, has just been released with improved meshing algorithms.

Months of work behind the scenes has resulted in new optimization algorithms for CFD solvers which may have had convergence problems in the past. The enhanced routines are included in the default settings of Harpoon v 2.5 which also includes an option for ‘super converge’ to help with any particularly difficult geometries.

New Software: EnSight Release Features New Camera Functionality

Post Processing Computational Engineering International (CEI) announced today that its latest release of EnSight includes a sophisticated camera feature, which allows users to create 3-D visualizations with multiple vantage points. The new feature provides users with nearly limitless viewing options and makes its possible to create walk-throughs and walk-arounds, follow trace particles through flows, and simulate real-world test cameras, such as those used in automotive crash tests.

The feature eliminates the need to move a virtual object simply to view it from a different perspective. Users can now view objects from any angle simply by moving virtual cameras around the object on user-defined pathways or by positioning static cameras at any defined point.

Automated Unstructured Viscous Meshing

Grid Generation Automated unstructured grid generation is routinely used for complex CFD analysis on a wide variety of analysis problems. The speed and ease with which an unstructured mesh is created is seldom matched by other meshing techniques.

However, isotropic unstructured meshes, for example those including only tetrahedral cells, either degrade solution accuracy near viscous walls or require prohibitively large mesh sizes. The large velocity gradient in the boundary layer near viscous walls is best captured by a specialized element which is oriented perpendicular to the wall.
